Stranger Than Paradise is a 1984 American black-and-white absurdist/deadpan comedy film, written, directed, and co-edited by Jim Jarmusch and starring jazz musician John Lurie, former Sonic Youth drummer-turned-actor Richard Edson, and Hungarian-born actress and violinist Eszter Balint. The film features a minimalist plot in which the main character, Willie, has a cousin from Hungary named Eva. Eva stays with him for ten days before going to Cleveland. Willie and his friend Eddie eventually go to Cleveland to visit Eva, and the three then take a trip to Florida. This film is shot entirely in single long takes with no standard coverage.
Since 2000, Lurie has suffered from symptoms attributed to “chronic Lyme disease” and has focused his attention on painting. His art has been shown in galleries and museums around the world. His primitivist painting Bear Surprise became an internet meme in Russia in 2006.
Following his music career, Edson has worked as an actor, appearing in over 35 movies. His more notable roles include a disreputable parking garage attendant in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986), man at newspaper stand in Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Richie in Howard the Duck (1986), Eddie in Jim Jarmusch’s cult film Stranger Than Paradise (1984), real-life gambler Billy Maharg in Eight Men Out, and the title character in Joey Breaker (1993). He also appeared in Platoon (1986), Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), Tougher Than Leather (1988), Let It Ride (1989), and Do the Right Thing (1989). He starred in the 1993 movie Super Mario Bros as Spike, King Koopa’s cousin. Edson played the lead role in three films directed by Raphael Nadjari: The Shade (1999), I Am Josh Polonski’s Brother (2001)[2] and Apartment #5c (2002).
In 2003, he appeared in the music video for Cave In’s single, “Anchor”. Edson played the central character of the video, a depressed man walking down the street with his feet encased in cement blocks.
His television appearances include The Adventures of Pete & Pete; the third season finale of Homicide: Life on the Street; and the 1990-91 series Shannon’s Deal, produced by John Sayles. Edson appeared in a 2007 TV commercial for The Travelers Companies Inc., in which he plays the human personification of risk. In total, Edson has appeared in about 85 movies/television shows.
Eszter first emerged as a child member of the avant-garde Squat Theatre troupe before making her cinematic debut in 1984 in director Jim Jarmusch’s independent film Stranger Than Paradise. She appeared in the 1990 film Bail Jumper. Roles in The Linguini Incident, Woody Allen’s Shadows and Fog and Steve Buscemi’s Trees Lounge followed. She played Fern in the 2019 film The Dead Don’t Die.
In 1985 she made her TV debut in Miami Vice. She played Dorothy Bain in the episode “Buddies” which aired November 1, 1985. In 2014 Balint appeared as Amia, a violin-playing Hungarian love interest for Louis C.K. on the latter’s FX sitcom, Louie.
Balint is an accomplished musician whose two releases, Flicker and Mud, both produced by JD Foster, were praised by The New York Times, The New Yorker, and Billboard Magazine. In his review of Mud, Jon Pareles writes: “Miss Balint has her own film noir sensibility as a songwriter. She puts arty twists into back-alley Americana… but the cleverness is not the point. She slips inside her characters to project their restlessness and longing.”
Balint has appeared on recordings by Michael Gira’s Angels of Light, Marc Ribot’s Los Cubanos Postizos and John Lurie’s Marvin Pontiac’s Greatest Hits, Dayna Kurtz, and the Swans. She was a featured guest member of Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog touring Europe throughout 2009 and is featured on their 2013 release “Your Turn.”
In 2015, Balint released a new critically acclaimed album Airless Midnight, her first since 2004’s Mud again produced by JD Foster. In the same year Paste Magazine premiered Balint’s first official music video, “Trouble You Don’t See.” Josh Jackson wrote: “Paste named Eszter Balint an artist to watch back in 2004 after she released her second album Mud. And while she stepped back from music to focus on parenting soon after, she’s delivered on that promise with this year’s long-awaited follow-up Airless Midnight, which comes on the heels of a recurring role as a Louis C.K.’s love interest in the most recent season of Louie.”
