For much of human history, mankind has faced a battle for existence over a short life and in the face of food scarcity, diseases and a constant threat of violence. As life has extended and people have become richer, especially those living in the advanced economies, so they have evolved to a situation where, for the majority, their children are safe and educated, work provides some financial security, and they can enjoy a retirement with some components of leisure. As life extends even further, people will be forced to move away from the lockstep of the three-stage life and face many more options about how they live their lives. A hundred years provides more time than required by the evolutionary imperative to breed, and more time in which to meet any financial security needs. So what is the purpose of these extra years if not to procreate and accumulate? Might these extra years, distributed throughout a life, bring the time and opportunity to explore who you are and arrive at a way of living that is nearer to your own personal values and hopes than to the traditions of the society into which you were born? If so, then this is perhaps the greatest gift that longevity can bestow.

International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (IWGSC)

On 17 August 2018, the IWGSC published in the international journal Science a detailed description and an analysis of the reference sequence of the bread wheat genome, the world’s most widely cultivated crop.
This work will pave the way for the production of wheat varieties better adapted to climate challenges, with higher yields, enhanced nutritional quality and improved sustainability.
The research article – authored by more than 200 scientists from 73 research institutions in 20 countries – presents the DNA sequence of the bread wheat variety Chinese Spring ordered along the 21 wheat chromosomes. It is the highest quality genome sequence produced to date for wheat.

They say that death comes like a thief in the night. Lesser vandals have the same M.O. The affliction that stole my vision, or at least a big chunk of it, did so as I slept. I went to bed seeing the world one way. I woke up seeing it another.
This was about four months ago, though it feels like an eternity. So much has happened since. I don’t mean all the tests and procedures: the vials upon vials of blood; the mapping of major arteries in my neck; the imaging of tiny vessels in my brain; the first injection of an experimental treatment (or, maybe, a placebo) into my right, dominant eye, where the damage occurred; then the second injection; and then, last week, the third.
I mean the rest of it. I went to bed believing that I was more or less in control — that the unfinished business, unrealized dreams and other disappointments in my life were essentially failures of industry and imagination, and could probably be redeemed with a fierce enough effort. I woke up to the realization of how ludicrous that was.

Participation in so-called high risk, extreme or adventure sports has grown significantly in the last decade. Whether they’re big wave surfing, mountaineering, desert running, BASE jumping or free diving, more people are chasing an adrenaline high and sometimes dying in the process. Psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists and neuroscientists say the motivation is not a death wish, but rather a yearning to feel alive — which reveals much about us as a society.

The 27 Club is a term that refers to the belief that an unusually high number of popular musicians and other artists have died at age 27, often as a result of drug and alcohol abuse, or violent means such as homicide or suicide.
Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison all died at the age of 27 between 1969 and 1971. At the time, the coincidence gave rise to some comment, but it was not until the death of Kurt Cobain, about two and a half decades later, that the idea of a “27 Club” began to catch on in public perception.
According to Hendrix and Cobain biographer Charles R. Cross, the growing importance of the media—Internet, television and magazines—and the response to an interview of Cobain’s mother were jointly responsible for such theories.
In 2011, seventeen years after Cobain’s death, Amy Winehouse died at the age of 27, and there was a large amount of media attention devoted to the club once again.

Indeed, we tend not to pay much attention to the immensely sophisticated sensory machines in the flowers and trees that can be found right in our own back gardens. While most animals can choose their environments, seek shelter in a storm, search for food and a mate, or migrate with the changing seasons, plants must be able to withstand and adapt to constantly changing weather, encroaching neighbors, and invading pests, without being able to move to a better environment. Because of this, plants have developed complex sensory and regulatory systems that allow them to modulate their growth in response to ever-changing conditions. An elm tree has to know if its neighbor is shading it from the sun so that it can find its own way to grow towards the light that’s available. A head of lettuce has to know if there are ravenous aphids about to eat it up so that it can protect itself by making poisonous chemicals to kill the pests. A Douglas fir tree has to know if whipping winds are shaking its branches so it can grow a stronger trunk. Cherry trees have to know when to flower.

The city remains completely indifferent to me, as it is to everyone. But without doing anything or talking to anyone, a walker on the street participates in the general excitement. Sitting at a diner and looking out, you see life itself on the other side of the window. Whatever your opinion of humanity, you have people to bewilder or console you. Manhattan reminds you of your utter irrelevance to the greater scheme of the universe.
Aging means giving up, de-accessioning, and knowing that wealth and worldly achievement count for little. Like urban life, it makes you feel a nobody. Paradoxically, it also makes you feel alive.

Schopenhauer said happiness is a negative state—but I disagree. For the last twenty years I have known what happiness means. I have the good fortune to be married to a wonderful wife. I wish I could write more about this, but it involves perfect love and perfect love is the most beautiful of all frustrations because it is more than one can express. As I live with Oona, the depth and beauty of her character are a continual revelation to me. Even as she walks ahead of me along the narrow sidewalks of Vevey with simple dignity, her neat little figure straight, her dark hair smoothed back showing a few silver threads, a sudden wave of love and admiration comes over me for all that she is—and a lump comes into my throat.
With such happiness, I sometimes sit out on our terrace at sunset and look over a vast green lawn to the lake in the distance, and beyond the lake to the reassuring mountains, and in this mood think of nothing but enjoy their magnificent serenity.

Je suis un négationniste de moi-même.

“There’s nothing more we can do.”
These words are often spoken by a physician just before transitioning a patient to hospice and palliative care and are regrettably uttered only days, if not hours, before the person dies. These words leave no room for hope; they make a transition to comfort care a much-feared and often avoided final destination.
Yet here’s the reality: More can always be done. More important, patients know exactly the “more” that they want. The real question is: Why don’t we ask?
“If I had a magic wand, what is it you would wish for today?” This is a question I ask of my patients receiving hospice and palliative care.
No one has ever asked that I rid them of their disease. Rather, I have been met with immediate replies of “make my anxiety go away” or “let me travel to see my family” and “let me go home and sit in my garden.”
These are the things that people say, over and over again, when they are given the opportunity to answer. The real test for physicians, then, is being willing to meet the challenge of discovering our patient’s true wishes, the fulfillment of which may push us well outside our own professional comfort zone.

You and I are reflections of the perfectly imperfect nature of life itself. Once we make peace with ourselves, imperfections and all, we see that every ounce of success, love, and serenity we can imagine is our very birthright and the birthright of everyone around us.

ASArmy Special Forces Major Jim Gant changed the face of America’s war effort in Afghanistan. A decorated Green Beret who spent years in Afghanistan and Iraq training indigenous fighters, Gant argued for embedding autonomous units with tribes across Afghanistan to earn the Afghans’ trust and transform them into a reliable ally to defeat the Taliban and counter al-Qaeda networks. The military’s top brass, including General David Petraeus, commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan, approved, and Gant was tasked with implementing his controversial strategy.
Veteran war correspondent Ann Scott Tyson first spoke with Gant when he was awarded the Silver Star in 2007. Spending time with him, she began to share his vision. Risking her life, she accompanied him to Afghanistan to cover the story. And then they fell in love.

Nomiyama

Faced with the young poet’s despondency, Freud is pushed to rebut: the transience of men and Nature does not debase them, but rather increases their value, which becomes a scarcity value: the beauty of Nature, destroyed by winter, returns, and this periodic return, in relation to the length of our lives, can be considered an eternal return; as to the beauty of a work of art or to the perfection of an intellectual achievement, their value is determined only by their significance to our present lives, and thus has no need to survive them. “But I noticed that I had made no impression either upon the poet or upon my friend”. Freud then questions the reason for this indifference, and finds it in the fact that the poet foresees the end of what he is looking at and at the same time the mourning which will come upon him. It is the refusal of such mourning that prevents him from enjoying the beauty which lies before him.

Serge Schmemann

The experts we corralled for our “Conversation” on aging, as you are about to discover, agree that we are pushing death farther and farther back, so that many of us may now expect to live a century or more. I find this most heartening, sharing as I do the common fear of the Reaper. But I am also aware that I and my fellow centenarians will pose some difficult new problems for our 80-year-old kids and 60-something grandkids, problems memorably identified by the Beatles back in the day: Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I’m one-oh-four?
That, in effect, is the ambivalence of our time: We are hurtling forward at ever faster rates in technology, science and medicine, but every leap forward seems to throw us an equal distance backward. We devise ways to squeeze hydrocarbons from the deepest rocks, and ensure more fuel for global warming. We invent gadgets to communicate all the time with everyone, and find our governments eavesdropping. Are we rushing forward or backward, or both?

Auxquelles s’ajoutent quelque 550 000 morts par an.

With our media and celebrity-heavy culture, it’s very, very common to see people unconsciously adopt a frame of reference that if they’re not famous, they’re not successful. If they’re not wealthy, they’re not successful. Even when they know better, they continue to behave in ways that give them this underlying sense of dissatisfaction if they’re not famous enough or rich enough.

There are moments when — if we’re doing the right kind of work — we can have both a very strong sense of achievement and a very powerful and fulfilling sense of satisfaction. There are some things we do where we hit a sweet spot — where we can feel both very positive emotions and also accomplish a great deal. But I think the other half of that is you have to choose how to spend your time.

People who achieve more are probably more conscientious. They’re more self-disciplined. They’re more likely to follow through.
On the other hand, people who are happier have more positive emotions. They have a greater sense of satisfaction. They are a little bit more emotionally intelligent, more self aware and maybe more open to novel experiences and are not so interested in controlling everything about their environment.

jpo80020_2722_2722.pdfThe want to be well permeates a person’s life when the first sign of disease knocks on the door of invincibility. I know this not because I am a physician, but because I accompanied a loved one on a far-too-short journey through the horror and poverty of disease. I saw her fear, her suffering, and her eyes filled with the fading of light—she wanted nothing more than the normalcy of good health.

Has medicine become such a business that the human factor has been relegated to the trash heap? Has the paucity of autonomy or even a falling income usurped the humanistic qualities of our worthy profession? Could it be that we lack empathic and compassionate mentors to plant humanistic seeds among young, impressionable physicians? Are we simply selecting the wrong people for medical school? Or does the rigorous training that ensues during the residency years generate an emotional egress of what attracted us to this principled and honorable profession in the first place: to relieve the suffering of a fellow human being, be it physical, social, spiritual, or emotional?

Vyacheslav Pyetsukh

That any attempt, no matter how feeble, no matter how documentary, to reconstruct reality by using the tools of literary discourse inevitably turns reality into its opposite, that is, into literature, should give pause for thought. This being the case the relationships we are looking for must be strictly obligate, perhaps even fated.
Here is another interesting observation: compared to literature, life is much more mottled, incoherent, variable, detailed, tedious. What follows is a bizarre suggestion: perhaps literature is indeed life, in other words, the ideal of its construction, the standard for all weights and measures, while so-called life comprises a sketch, avenues of approach, a blank, and in the most felicitous situations—a version. More than anything it looks as if literature, word of honour, is the fair copy and life a rough copy, and not even the most useful.

Rickie Lambert celebrates scoring for EnglandLambert only learned of his first call-up last Thursday after a sleepless night as his wife gave birth to the couple’s third child. The adulation he enjoyed post-match was fine reward for a nomadic career that has taken him from Blackpool to Macclesfield, Stockport to Rochdale, then prolific spells with Bristol Rovers and over four years at Southampton. “I know people will remind me every day about the beetroot factory [where he worked part-time for £20-a-day to supplement his income while with Macclesfield 12 years ago], but I don’t mind that,” he said. “It shows how far I’ve come, so it’s superb.”

2013-07-21 17.48.59For a period of my life, from my 27th to my 39th years, I slept alone: I had no sex. I wasn’t unhappy. Or frustrated. In fact, I found no sex preferable to disappointing sex.
Just before giving up, I had a boyfriend. He often said that we were happy sexually, but frankly he was blind to my unhappiness. So that winter, I went skiing without him.
Alone in all that sun and snow, absorbing energy from the sky and mountains, I let my body breathe quietly. The freedom and whiteness of the snow and mountains produced a kind of ecstasy.
I believe that a desert is sometimes necessary. Sometimes, it is what your soul and your body need. A rest. To dream instead of do. And believe me, when the body really wants the skin of someone else, it knows perfectly how to behave. You will look into someone’s eyes, and nature will take over. No matter how old you are. No matter wrinkles, or norms.
Finally, I’ve met someone. Not a long story, but a very important one. I’ve met a man who is not afraid of my long years of solitude and is perhaps heated and reassured by my honesty and what he calls my “exciting expectations.” Who could ask for more?

Well here it is… the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise…How did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go? I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like.
And so…now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!! But, at least I know that though the winter has come, and I’m not sure how long it will last…this I know, that when it’s over on this earth…it’s over.
Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done…things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I’m happy to have done. It’s all in a lifetime.

Life is short, break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably, and never regret anything that made you smile. Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

Billions of dollars can buy a lot.
Lavish houses, luxury cars, elegant yachts, expensive clothes, dining extravaganzas in the best restaurants in town. Travel to exotic destinations. Billions can bring power and fame — and opportunities to contribute to the causes of humanity.
But there are three things billions cannot buy.

  1. Peace of Mind
  2. Sanity
  3. Friendship

The Bottom line: Billions can buy many amenities and trophies, the necessary conditions to getting a good life, but they cannot buy peace of mind, sanity, and friendship, the sufficient conditions for maintaining a good life.

It has always seemed strange to me…The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.
