salt2Reduction in stroke and heart attack deaths occurred in England from 2003 – 2011, with the fall in blood pressure (BP) that has occurred in England over this time, taken from the Health Survey for England.
(Changes in salt intake as measured by 24 h urinary sodium excretion (UNa), BP, stroke and ischaemic heart disease (IHD) mortality in England from 2003 to 2011.
* p<0.05, *** p<0.001 for trend.)

The reduction in salt intake is likely to be an important contributor to the falls in BP from 2003 to 2011 in England. As a result, it would have contributed substantially to the decreases in stroke and IHD mortality.

    World Action On Salt and Health (WASH) was established in 2005 and is a global group with the mission to improve the health of populations throughout the world by achieving a gradual reduction in salt intake. WASH works to encourage multi-national food companies to reduce salt in their products and with Governments in different countries highlighting the need for a population wide salt reduction strategy.

    The overall aim is to bring about a reduction in salt intake throughout the world to the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended maximum intake of 5g per day by reducing the amount of salt in processed foods as well as salt added during cooking, and at the table.

    So far WASH has 527 members from 95 countries. Members are mainly experts in hypertension, however some have other roles as well – but all have an interest in reducing salt intake in their individual countries.
