Racial discrimination (private beaches of Cote d’Azur)

She called several beaches. Depending on the surname she gave, some accepted or refused to take a reservation. With an African-sounding name, it was complete. I called back giving a very French name, and strangely there was still room.

Three couples of young people go, each in turn, to seek to rent a place (deckchair and parasol) on a private beach. What is special about these groups? Their skin color or their origin. First, the “Black” group. Then, the group “Maghrébins”. Finally, it will be the turn of the “White” group. Entry was refused to the first two couples but not to the third.

Hidden cameras show discrimination on Côte d’Azur private beaches, say activists

Anti-racism activists who secretly filmed private beaches on the Côte d’Azur are planning legal action claiming discrimination on the French Riviera.

SOS-Racisme sent couples of different ethnic backgrounds to exclusive coastal hotspots and used hidden cameras to record how each was received.

French Riviera private beaches scrutinized for racial discrimination

    Le Monde

    https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2022/08/06/french-riviera-private-beaches-scrutinized-for-racial-discrimination_5992707_7.html

On a high turnover summer weekend, SOS-Racisme screened private beaches at the seaside resort of Juan-les-Pins to unearth often hard-to-prove cases of discrimination based on ethnicity.

It was reminiscent of summer camp. At 9 am, Kyra, Fiona and Aurore took charge of their 10 friends at the Nice train station who arrived from Paris the night before. Getting everyone into the minibus rented for the day proved difficult. We set off toward Juan-les-Pins (Alpes-Maritimes) and tossed cookies packages and sun cream to each other while chatting happily. When the Mediterranean shoreline came into sight, heads turned and voices went quiet.

On the seaside, the names of the private beaches were uttered in succession. “We’ll go to that one. They’re fascists,” said Aurore Barbier. At SOS-Racisme, you can kid around, but only to a point. The day before, the 23-year-old lawyer had called several beaches in Juan-les-Pins as a preliminary test to select which ones to check. Some of them either accepted or rejected a reservation based on the last name she gave. “With an African-sounding name, it was full. I called back giving a very French name, and strangely enough, there was still room.” The organization believes this is a case of discrimination that needs to be verified.

On The Côte D’Azur, Private Beaches Put To The Test Of Racial Discrimination

    by David Sadle

    https://globeecho.com/news/europe/france/on-the-cote-dazur-private-beaches-put-to-the-test-of-racial-discrimination/

“I feel like we’re going to summer camp. » At 9 o’clock in the morning, in Nice station, Kyra, Fiona and Aurore oversee their ten comrades, who arrived from Paris the night before. Difficult to get everyone into the minibus rented for the day. Itinerary fixed, it sets off towards Juan-les-Pins (Alpes-Maritimes). During the journey, we send packets of biscuits and sunscreen while chatting happily. At the sight of the Mediterranean shore, heads turn and the volume drops.

On the seaside, everyone lists the names of the private beaches that parade. “That one, we’ll go. It’s fachos,” launches Aurora. At SOS-Racisme, we joke, but up to a point. The day before, the 23-year-old lawyer called several beaches in Juan. Depending on the surname she gave, some accepted or refused to take a reservation. “With an African-sounding name, it was complete. I called back giving a very French name, and strangely there was still room. » The association then suspects discrimination that will have to be verified.

Aurore Barbier, project manager at the legal department of SOS-Racisme, gives instructions for the conduct of the testing campaign on racial discrimination at the entrance to the private beaches of Juan-Les-Pins, in the Alpes-Maritimes, on 30 July 2022.

This is precisely the mission of these militants today. Through testing operations, a method used by SOS-Racisme since the end of the 1990s, they will try to flush out discrimination at the entrance to private beaches. This summer, they are leaving Nice for the resorts of Antibes. “The beaches of Nice, we have done them too much. Last year, no cases of discrimination were identified. Proof that over the years, our actions pay off,” welcomes Kyra, 28, project manager for two years within the association.

    In hiding mode

In the middle of the morning, the serious things begin. Employees and activists gather for a “brief”, in a city street. Two local elected officials, Sonia Naffati from La France insoumise and Saber Gasmi from Europe-Ecologie-Les Verts, join the small assembly as character witnesses. Everyone is silent when a passerby approaches them. “You have to be careful to avoid leaks. This has happened to us in previous operations,” explains Fiona, 24, communications officer.

Aurore, Excel spreadsheets and itineraries in hand, explains how to proceed. Three couples of young people go, each in turn, to seek to rent a place (deckchair and parasol) on a private beach. What is special about these groups? Their skin color or their origin. “First, the ‘Black’ group. Then, the group “Maghrébins”. Finally, it will be the turn of the “control” group, that of the Whites. » If entry is refused to the first two couples but not to the third, there is racial discrimination. And to prove it, everything must be filmed on the phone. In this busy period, SOS-Racisme suspects these establishments of filtering their customers according to their origins. “Quota logic” denounced by the president of the association, Dominique Sopo.

Private beaches of the Côte d’Azur accused of racial discrimination

During a “testing”, SOS racism highlighted the practice of racial discrimination before allocating deckchairs for rent.

    ” Sorry.

It’s not going to be possible.

We are fully booked until next Sunday”.

The testing carried out by SOS Racisme in Juan-les-Pins (Alpes-Maritimes), and filmed with a hidden camera by

    Loopsider

, is final for some beach attendants on the Côte d’Azur.

When a couple of people from the Maghreb come to rent a deckchair, the private beach opposes a refusal arguing that they are complete.

A couple of black people then try it, reaping the same refusal.

Moments later, it’s a couple of white people who show up and get their sunbeds with no hassle.

The testing highlighted this racist practice of two beach attendants from the seaside resort.

The association announced that it would file a complaint.
