Kaoru Mitoma

Kaoru Mitoma of Brighton & Hove Albion was superb against Wolves
Justified the decision to keep him in the starting lineup as he caused right-back Nelson Semedo a lot of problems along the left wing. He took his first goal for the club in style with a powerful header and then drew a foul from Semedo on the edge of the box that led to the Wolves man being sent off. Was a constant threat and Wolves couldn’t handle him at all.

Gary Lineker and Danny Murphy agreed Kaoru Mitoma made a big impression during Brighton’s 3-2 win at Wolves on Saturday.

The Japanese international scored his first goal for the Albion with a powerful headed effort, played a key role in both Adam Lallana’s opener and Pascal Gross’ winner, and his pace took him away from Nelson Semedo, who was then sent off for fouling the 25-year-old just outside the box.

Mitoma also won seven ground duels, recovered the ball five times, won three tackles, completed two out of his three dribbles, came out on top in two of his three aerial duels, and had a passing accuracy of 88%. It is worth noting that he cost just £2.5million from Kawasaki Frontale just under 18 months ago.

Murphy, who played much of his career at Liverpool, and ex-Tottenham star Lineker concurred that Mitoma put in an excellent display at Molineux. The former said the Japanese star made it difficult for defenders as he is good with both his left and right foot.

He added that he provided an end product, was so influential in the match, and Roberto De Zerbi was justified in keeping him in the team after starting him against Chelsea, a game they won 4-1, last weekend.

Lineker said on BBC’s Match of the Day: “It was a smashing win for Brighton and a new face making a fresh impression, Mitoma. We will see him in the World Cup playing for Japan.”

To which Murphy replied: “Brilliant performance. They [Brighton] have a habit of finding these players that we don’t know about. Kept his [Mitoma’s] place after last week’s great performance against Chelsea, and rightly so. What you want from a forward player, of course, is an end product.
