培養肉とは、「本物に近い “食肉の代用品”」のことで、英語では「Cultured meat」と呼ばれます。ウシやブタなどの動物から取り出した少量の細胞を動物の体外で人工的に培養して増やし、それらを集めて組織を作ることで生み出されます。従来の食肉生産とは違い、動物そのものが食肉の供給源にはなりません。「飼育・繁殖・解体や飼料の生産・加工などの工程」が不要となり、生産期間がおよそ2年から3週間程度へと短縮されています。
また、動物に与えるストレスや環境負荷も抑えることができます。下記は「1kg当たりの生産における従来の畜産と培養肉」を比較したものですが、①温室効果ガスの排出　②農地面積　③水の消費量　④生産期間　の４カテゴリすべてにおいて「低減」が見られます。このように培養肉は動物や環境にやさしく、「クリーンミート」とも呼ばれることもあります。

その人たちに給料を払っても まだカネ集めになるのだから

おカネが絡む社会活動には 批判や中傷が付きまとう

「人工生命」という研究分野があります。仮想空間で人工的に造った生命体の変化プロセスから、生命に関するシステムに迫る学問です。この分野で、興味深いファインディングがあります。
外的な影響を受けない「閉じた環境」において、同じ初期値で、モデルを同じにして生命体の進化を観察しても、毎回異なる結果になる、ということです。シンプルにモデル化されたクローズな系でもそうだということは、それよりもはるかに要素が多く、閉じた系とはいい難いこの地球上では、仮に過去と同じ出来事がすべて繰り返し起きたとしても同じ人類は生まれない、ということ。そんな環境下で我々は生きているわけです。数秒後とかならともかく、未来の本当の姿を予想できると考えること自体が非科学的なのです。

暮れは高成長、初夏は低成長というふうに極端なブレが出てくるため、1年を通して均等にならす。これが「季節調整」である。ちなみに、この季節調整を入れないと、今年4〜6月の「実質GDP」は年率で実にマイナス9・9％。そんなに低かったのかと驚くかも知れないが、これも日本経済の実力を示すGDPのひとつなのだ。
ところが、先にあげた「4％」成長には、首を捻らざるを得ない数字が紛れ込んでいる。今年4〜6月は、13兆5378億円もの「季節調整」が“大盛り”になっているのだ。
こんなに「季節調整」を盛ってしまえば、たいていの不景気は「好景気」に化けてしまう。経済社会総合研究所は、いったいどこからこんな数字を弾き出してきたのだろうか。
だが、やっぱりというべきか、しばらく経ってから「化けの皮」が剥がれてきた。
速報値から、ひと月も経たない9月8日、内閣府はGDPを4・0％から2・5％（改定値）へ大幅に引き下げたのだ。実に4割もの下方修正である。

最近、日本でGDPが発表されるたび、中国の統計部門の役人が、そうつぶやいていたことを、つい思い出してしまうのだ。

China, officially the People’s Republic of China, is comfortably the largest country in the world today. In January 2013, the Chinese Government released data confirming that the population of China was an impressive 1,354,040,000, although this does not include Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau. As of September 2013, that number had grown even further to 1,360,720,000. The current 2015 estimate based on United Nations projections, is just over 1.4 billion.
To understand China’s population and demographics, it helps to understand its government a bit. The People’s Republic of China (PRC) is governed by the Communist Party with its seat of government in Beijing, which exercises jurisdiction over 5 autonomous regions, 22 provinces, 4 direct-controlled municipalities and 2 primarily self-governing special administrative regions (Macau and Hong Kong). The PRC also claims Taiwan, which is controlled by a separate political entity called the Republic of China (ROC) as its 23rd province. This makes population figures a bit confusing.

The extent to which human beings affect the environment depends, in large measure, on the number of people in the world. Despite the paramount significance of this statistic, many students, environmental analysts and even policymakers have a distorted understanding of the history of population growth. The confusion stems from a single misleading graph that often appears in the environmental literature.
The graph in question gives the distinct impression that human numbers skyrocketed during three relatively discrete periods—specifically, at the advent of toolmaking, agriculture and industrialization—but in each case subsequently stabilized. Edward S. Deevey, Jr., a noted ecologist and member of the National Academy of Sciences, first presented the problematic plot in 1960, in an article about human population in Scientific American (one of the eight he published in that magazine before his death in 1988). He wrote, “the population curve has moved upward stepwise in response to the three major revolutions that have marked the evolution of culture . . . But the evolution of the population size also indicates the approach to equilibrium in the two interrevolutionary periods of the past.”
Since Deevey penned this description, various renditions of his figure have appeared in at least seven other books or articles on the subject—most of which were published since 1990. What rekindled interest in a 41-year-old graph? The answer is plain: In recent years, many scholars have sought to better understand the links between technology and population growth. And some of them uncritically accepted Deevey’s view that two rapid increases in population were followed byperiods of approximate stasis.

この歌の心にてこそあれと申されしとなり。花紅葉は即書院台子の結構にたとへたり。その花もみじをつくずくとながめ来りて見れば、無一物の境界、浦のとまやなり。花紅葉をしらぬ人の、初よりとま屋にはすまれぬぞ。ながめながめてこそ、とまやのさびすましたる所は見立たれ。これ茶の本心なりといはれしなり。また宗易、今一首見出したりとて、常に二首を書付、信ぜられしなり。同集、家隆の歌に

花をのみ待らん人に山ざとの雪間の草の春を見せばや

これまた相加へて得心すべし。世上の人々そこの山かしこの森の花が、いついつさくべきかと、あけ暮外にもとめて、かの花紅葉も我心にある事をしらず。只目に見ゆる色ばかりを楽むなり。山里は浦のとまやも同前のさびた住居なり。去年一とせの花も紅葉も、ことごとく雪が埋み尽して、何もなき山里に成て、さびすましたまでは浦のとまや同意なり。さてまたかの無一物の所より、をのずから感をもよほすやうなる所作が、天然とはずれはずれにあるは、うずみ尽したる雪の、春に成て陽気をむかへ、雪間のところどころに、いかにも青やかなる草が、ほつほつと二葉三葉もへ出たるごとく、力を加へずに真なる所のある道理にとられしなり。歌道の心は子細もあるべけれども、この両首は紹鴎、利休茶の道にとり用ひらるる心入を聞覚候てしるしをく事なり。かやうに道に心ざしふかくさまざまの上にて得道ありし事、愚僧等が及ぶべきにあらず。まことに尊ぶべくありがたき道人、茶の道かとをもへば、即、祖師仏の悟道なり。殊勝々々。

本来、「中元」とは7月15日のことで、古く中国では上元（1月15日）、下元（10月15日）と共に重要な祭日でした。これは道教の思想に由来します。この3つの元はそれぞれ3人の天神様の誕生日で、人々はお祝いにお供え物をしました。
一方日本には仏教の「盂蘭盆会」、つまり先祖供養の行事「盆」があります。この盆には、迎え火や盆踊り、送り火などの様々な儀式があり、その内の１つに「盆礼」があります。これは親や親戚、近所の人々の間で霊前に供える品物をやりとりする習慣でした。盆礼は一部の地域では生御霊とも呼ばれ、死者を供養すると共に、生きた魂も供養する考え方の下、物品を取り交わしたようです。
これが中国の中元の供え物と結びつき、現在のように盆の時期に贈り物のやりとりをするようになりました。この慣習は室町時代の公家の間で広まり、江戸時代になると庶民の間でも定着しました。
歳暮は、元来新年に年神へ供える物品を、年の暮れに本家や家元に持っていく行事でした。今でも新巻き鮭や数の子などを贈るのは、年神様に供えるお神酒の酒肴に由来するといわれています。これもお中元同様、江戸期に庶民層に普及したようです。

元々は日本古来の行事である御魂(霊)祭り(１年を２回に分けて先祖の霊を迎えてお供え物をして祀った)が起源で、分家から本家に・嫁ぎ先から実家に・使用人から雇い主などへお供え物が贈り届けられたことに発祥します。
当時は正月を前にして、年の瀬を無事に越し新しい年を迎えるにあたっての必需品として、お酒・お餅・干し魚・数の子・スルメ・昆布・塩鮭などの日持ち食品が贈られていたようです。
現在では、贈られる品物も随分と豊富になりましたが、実家や日頃お世話になっている方々へ一年間の感謝を込めてお礼の気持ちが贈られています。

三菱ＵＦＪフィナンシャル・グループなど３メガ銀行が国債の保有残高を大幅に減らしたことがわかった。６月末の残高は合計で約90兆円と３月末から２割圧縮した。大規模な金融緩和を進める日銀の国債買い入れに積極的に応じたことが背景にある。３メガ銀とも2013年４～６月期は増益になったが、国内融資による収益回復は鈍い。
三菱ＵＦＪは４～６月に国債の保有額を約８兆円削減。三井住友フィナンシャルグループは６兆円以上、みずほフィナンシャルグループも５兆円規模で圧縮した。４月初旬までは市場で売却する動きも目立ったが、同月４日の「量的・質的金融緩和」以降は日銀が国債買い入れを強化したのに応じて残高を減らした。
３社合計の国債残高はリーマン・ショック後に急増。収益の国債依存度は高く、13年３月期は連結最終利益の合計2.2兆円に対し、国債売買益が３割強を占めた。
各行は国債残高を減らしながら償還までの平均残存年数を短くしており、利回りを確保しにくくなっている。このため「国債頼みの収益構造は限界」との声もある。
国債残高を減らした分の資金の大半は日銀の当座預金に振り替わっており、外国債券や株式への資産シフトは進んでいない。国内融資は昨年後半から増加基調にあるが、国債の減少分を穴埋めするほど資金需要の裾野は広がっていない。

Marco di Lauro said he nearly “fell off his chair” when he saw the image being used, and said he was “astonished” at the failure of the corporation to check their sources.

The secret language of statistics, so appealing in a fact-minded culture, is employed to sensationalize, inflate, confuse, and oversimplify. Statistical methods and statistical terms are necessary in reporting the mass data of social and economic trends, business conditions, “opinion” polls, the census. But without writers who use the words with honesty and understanding and readers who know what they mean, the result can only be semantic nonsense.

Round numbers are always false.

Men more frequently require to be reminded than informed.

To a poet nothing can be useless.

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.

My favorite example is to do the following:
1. Get data on all the fires in San Francisco for the last ten years.
2. Correlate the number of fire engines at each fire and the damages in dollars at each fire.
Note the significant relationship between number of fire engines and the amount of damage. Conclude that fire engines cause the damage.
The reason that I like this example is that the conclusion is so absurd. Anyone will quickly recognize that both variables result from and are correlated with the overall size of the fire. However, many spurious correlations do not seem absurd and some seem compelling.

The hardest thing of all is to find a black cat in a dark room, especially if there is no cat.

The Observer Effect, you learned it in science class: the act of observation itself will change the phenomenon being observed. That’s never been more obvious than with what Google Street View cars find these days.
At first the Google cars caught some real, debaucherous moments, stuff you weren’t supposed to see. Now, when people see a Street View car coming, they know it, and they prepare for the lulz. Case in point, this sexy-time couple in Australia, who must have seen the car coming on Dukes Highway, sped in front and got into position. This public display is actually on the Google map, but that doesn’t mean the P went in the V, right?

Definition of ‘Greater Fool Theory‘
A theory that states it is possible to make money by buying securities, whether overvalued or not, and later selling them at a profit because there will always be someone (a bigger or greater fool) who is willing to pay the higher price.

When acting in accordance with the greater fool theory, an investor buys questionable securities without any regard to their quality, but with the hope of quickly selling them off to another investor (the greater fool), who might also be hoping to flip them quickly. Unfortunately, speculative bubbles always burst eventually, leading to a rapid depreciation in share price due to the selloff.

While researching a photo entry about North Korea’s recent threats of war, I discovered an image released by North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) that appears to have been digitally manipulated — at least two, possibly three hovercraft appear to have been pasted into the scene of a military exercise, reportedly taking place on North Korea’s east coast on March 25, 2013. Two hovercraft crashing through the surf, nearest to the photographer, appear to be just a single hovercraft, with a digital twin copied and pasted nearby. Two of the more distant craft appear to be digital twins as well. A third vehicle in the scene has some of the hallmarks of digital pasting, including color mismatch, a slight halo, and soft edges. We contacted AFP, which distributed this image from KCNA, and they have since removed the image due to evidence of tampering.

The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, which had declined in January, rebounded in February. The Index now stands at 69.6 (1985=100), up from 58.4 in January.
Consumers’ assessment of present day conditions improved in February. Those claiming business conditions are “good” rose to 18.1 percent from 16.1 percent, while those stating business conditions are “bad” decreased to 27.8 percent from 28.4 percent. Consumers’ appraisal of the labor market was mixed. Those saying jobs are “plentiful” increased to 10.5 percent from 8.5 percent, while those claiming jobs are “hard to get” edged up to 37.0 percent from 36.6 percent.
Consumers were more optimistic about the short-term outlook this month. Those expecting business conditions to improve over the next six months increased to 18.9 percent from 15.6 percent, while those expecting business conditions to worsen declined to 16.5 percent from 20.4 percent.
Consumers’ outlook for the labor market was more positive. Those anticipating more jobs in the months ahead improved to 16.7 percent from 14.4 percent, while those expecting fewer jobs decreased to 21.5 percent from 26.7 percent. The proportion of consumers expecting their incomes to increase rose to 15.7 percent from 13.5 percent, while those anticipating a decrease fell to 19.6 percent from 23.3 percent.

菅政府では、また昨日文部科学大臣が、小学生など学童が浴びても良い年間累積放射線量を1ミリシーベルト以下に決めたそうだ。これは全日本国民が年中浴びている自然放射線以下である。馬鹿げたことを決めて、生活や教育を不便にしているだけである。低線量率放射線療法を実践している東大の稲恭宏医学博士から聞いた。毎時100マイクロシーベルト、即ち年間876ミリシーベルト以下の放射線なら24時間、365日継続的に浴び続けていても人体にとって悪いことなど一つもないそうだ。稲博士は従来治りにくかったリュウマチなども、ガンの治療に使われる高線量率放射線とは別物の低線量率放射線を当てることによって治ることも多いと言っている。
私はブログやツイッター、講演などで、現在の福島原発周辺の状況は放射能的には「危険ではないのでは？」という持論を言い続けている。

平成８年から平成１８年の１０年で、大阪府総生産は、２.４１兆円減少している。
大阪府民の一人当たりの所得は、３５７万円から３０８万円へ約４９万円減少している。

大阪は一地域でありながらアジアや中東の中規模国家、例えば台湾やサウジアラビア並みのＧＤＰを擁している(府内ＧＤＰは約３８兆円)。
環境、エネルギー、エレクトロニクス等の分野では世界をリードする技術を誇り、産業基盤も充実している。これからの日本経済を牽引できる潜在可能性は十分ある。
いまこそ、地域が自らの発展を戦略的に目指すことのできる枠組みを構築する必要がある。

Lemmings do not commit mass suicide. It’s a myth, but it’s remarkable how many people believe it. It’s a complete urban legend. It blew out of proportion based on a Disney documentary in the ’50s, and that brought it to the mainstream.
In 1958 Walt Disney produced “White Wilderness,” part of the studio’s “True Life Adventure” series. “White Wilderness” featured a segment on lemmings, detailing their strange compulsion to commit mass suicide.
According to a 1983 investigation by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation producer Brian Vallee, the lemming scenes were faked. The lemmings supposedly committing mass suicide by leaping into the ocean were actually thrown off a cliff by the Disney filmmakers. The epic “lemming migration” was staged using careful editing, tight camera angles and a few dozen lemmings running on snow covered lazy-Susan style turntable.
“White Wilderness” was filmed in Alberta, Canada, a landlocked province, and not on location in lemmings’ natural habitat. There are about 20 lemming species found in the circumpolar north – but evidently not in that area of Alberta. So the Disney people bought lemmings from Inuit children a couple provinces away in Manitoba and staged the whole sequence.
Do they really kill themselves?’ No. The answer is unequivocal, no they don’t.
