Once upon a time, I dreamt I was a butterfly, fluttering hither and thither, to all intents and purposes a butterfly. I was conscious only of my happiness as a butterfly, unaware that I was myself. Soon I awaked, and there I was, veritably myself again. Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly, dreaming I am a man.
「胡蝶の夢」は間違いなく荘子の言葉だが、”The wise man knows that it is better to sit on the banks of a remote mountain stream than to be emperor of the whole world.” には出典がない。
英語ではその他にも、
・ A path is made by walking on it.
・ Rewards and punishment is the lowest form of education.
・ Happiness is the abscence of the striving for happiness.
というような出典のない「荘子の言葉」があり、よく引用される。

英語では、それが荘子の言葉として定着しているが、中国語ではあまりお目にかかれない。「智者知道，静坐在偏僻的山间溪流边，胜过统治全世界」 は、英語の中国語訳としか思えないし、『荘子』の隅から隅まで見てみても、そんなことは言っていない。
