There are six main characters in the novel, and they each fit a different description: Daisy is pursued by both Gatsby and Tom; Gatsby and Tom are pursing Daisy, while Myrtle is pursuing Tom; Nick and Jordan are busy with their careers; and Wilson is tired in all aspects of his life.
