Cultured meat

In-Vitro meat is the (idea of) manufacturing of meat products through “tissue-engineering” technology. Cultured meat (= in-vitro meat = clean meat) could have financial, health, animal welfare and environmental advantages over traditional meat. The idea: To produce animal meat, but without using an animal. Starting cells are taken painlessly from live animals, they are put into a culture media where they start to proliferate and grow, independently from the animal. Theoretically, this process would be efficient enough to supply the global demand for meat. All this would happen without any genetic manipulation, i.e. without the need to interfere with the cells’ genetic sequences.
Producing cultured meat for processed meat products, such as sausages, burgers and nuggets should be comparatively simple, whereas cultured meat which should be more highly structured, such as for an in-vitro steak is considerably more of a challenge. A steak is made of muscle tissue which is threaded through with extremely long, fine capillaries which transport blood and nutrients directly to the cells. It is much more difficult to reproduce such a complex structure than it is to put together the small balls of cells which grow to larger balls of cells which in turn become in-vitro chicken nuggets.

AI is the most profound technology we are working on today. Whether it’s helping doctors detect diseases earlier or enabling people to access information in their own language, AI helps people, businesses and communities unlock their potential. And it opens up new opportunities that could significantly improve billions of lives. That’s why we re-oriented the company around AI six years ago — and why we see it as the most important way we can deliver on our mission: to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

Since then we’ve continued to make investments in AI across the board, and Google AI and DeepMind are advancing the state of the art. Today, the scale of the largest AI computations is doubling every six months, far outpacing Moore’s Law. At the same time, advanced generative AI and large language models are capturing the imaginations of people around the world. In fact, our Transformer research project and our field-defining paper in 2017, as well as our important advances in diffusion models, are now the basis of many of the generative AI applications you’re starting to see today.

It’s a really exciting time to be working on these technologies as we translate deep research and breakthroughs into products that truly help people. That’s the journey we’ve been on with large language models. Two years ago we unveiled next-generation language and conversation capabilities powered by our Language Model for Dialogue Applications (or LaMDA for short).

We’ve been working on an experimental conversational AI service, powered by LaMDA, that we’re calling Bard. And today, we’re taking another step forward by opening it up to trusted testers ahead of making it more widely available to the public in the coming weeks.

Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.

Sundar Pichai (CEO of Google and Alphabet) – 1

Googlers,

I have some difficult news to share. We’ve decided to reduce our workforce by approximately 12,000 roles. We’ve already sent a separate email to employees in the US who are affected. In other countries, this process will take longer due to local laws and practices.

This will mean saying goodbye to some incredibly talented people we worked hard to hire and have loved working with. I’m deeply sorry for that. The fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here.

Over the past two years we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today.

I am confident about the huge opportunity in front of us thanks to the strength of our mission, the value of our products and services, and our early investments in AI. To fully capture it, we’ll need to make tough choices. So, we’ve undertaken a rigorous review across product areas and functions to ensure that our people and roles are aligned with our highest priorities as a company. The roles we’re eliminating reflect the outcome of that review. They cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels and regions.

To the Googlers who are leaving us: Thank you for working so hard to help people and businesses everywhere. Your contributions have been invaluable and we are grateful for them.

Project Economy (Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez)

Great projects don’t just make work better—they make the world better.
If managers and organizations want to build the competencies required to transform themselves and thrive in the new project economy, they’ll need to get comfortable devising strategies that are driven not by efficiency but by change. They’ll need to allocate more resources, budgets, and decision-making power to projects and project teams at the expense of the traditional departmental hierarchy. They’ll need a simple framework, such as the project canvas, so that everybody in their organizations can get involved. They’ll need to build project management competencies and adopt new technologies. They’ll need to encourage a shift in focus from inputs and outputs to outcomes and value. They’ll need to broaden the scope of their ambitions for their projects, by including, for example, a focus on diversity and sustainability.
If all of us as leaders can do these things, just imagine what we’ll collectively make possible: By executing our projects better, we’ll be able to provide trillions of dollars’ worth of additional benefits to the world.

Google-Meta advertising duopoly

For the past decade there have been two universally acknowledged truths about digital advertising. First, the rapidly growing industry was largely impervious to the business cycle. Second, it was dominated by the duopoly of Google (in search ads) and Meta (in social media), which one jealous rival has compared to John Rockefeller’s hold on oil in the late 19th century.
Both of these verities are now being challenged simultaneously. As China’s economy slows and the West’s slides towards a recession, companies everywhere are squeezing their marketing budgets. Until recently, that would have meant cutting non-digital ads but maintaining, or even raising, online spending. With most ad dollars now going online, that strategy is running out of road. Last quarter Meta reported its first-ever year-on-year decline in revenues. Snap, a smaller rival, is laying off a fifth of its workforce.
Powerful new rivals are upsetting Google and Meta’s advertising duopoly. And the challengers look well-placed to increase their gains. The Economist explore how digital advertising is spreading into other markets where the new challengers are well positioned, such as audio and video games.

Don’t Get Blinded by the Numbers (Roger L. Martin)

More and more we’re coming to see that strategy is as much about interpreting as it is about analyzing. When we look at the prospects of a car like the Mini Cooper, we must not only measure its fuel consumption and interior space but also take into account the beauty of its design and the exhilaration of driving it. We can quantify the revenue opportunities from impinging on the privacy of Facebook users, but we can’t measure the betrayal those users feel.
Although factors such as design and trust can’t be reduced to numbers, they can be interpreted and understood. In fact, only by understanding them can we make meaningful distinctions between alternative strategies or predict customers’ emotional responses to a change in direction.

We might not be able to stop car manufacturers from installing these increasingly gigantic screens, but I would like to present a solution to the only real “problem” that these giant screens solved: How do you watch your maps app while driving? Buy one of those $9 stands that affixes itself to the dashboard of your car and put your phone in it. That way, you can turn on your maps app while driving and keep it at eye level.

Since when is literally anyone allowed to quit being royal?
In case anyone’s forgotten, I’m ninety-goddamn-THREE. A few months off ninety four. I challenge you to find anyone else my age who is still working around the clock in a job they’ve had since they fell out of the womb.
I’m tired and my feet hurt. I feel like watching the midday movie and staying there until June. I want to read crime novels and go on a dirty cruise where there’s dress up nights and scotch and sodas are included. I desperately want to wear loose fitting slacks and patterned blouses without a bra and orthopaedic shoes from the chemist.
But that’s not how life works. Instead, you get up everyday. You put on your hat. You put on your gloves. You put on your petticoat and your stockings and maybe a tasteful brooch, and you get on with it. Until you die.
Have I enjoyed every day of it? F*ck no. Most of the time I want to tear off my purple tweed coat and pull on a snuggie, but that’s. not. the. rules.
Meghan and Harry get to write their own rules though. In America it’s all about ‘joy’ and ‘fulfilment’ and ‘YOLO’ and ‘drawing boundaries’ and everyone thinks they’re a bloody guest on Dr Phil.
But… how do I put this politely?
No one cares how you feel.

The term “billionaire effect” denotes the tendency of billionaire-controlled companies to generate higher returns. Over the last 15 years, the annualized average returns of public billionaire-controlled companies have been almost twice as high as the performance of the broad equity market. Billionaire-controlled companies have delivered an annualized performance of 17.8%, clearly outshining the 9.1% of the MSCI AC World Index. Their return on equity of 16.6% over the last 10 years has also substantially exceeded the 11.3% that the MSCI AC World Index averaged.
The “billionaire effect” arises due to a combination of personality traits shared by most billionaires: smart risk-taking, business focus, and determination. Billionaires are exceptionally focused on their businesses, they have an appetite for smart risk taking, and their determination isn’t faltered by hurdles. They are far-sighted, thinking years ahead, conjuring up visions and devising roadmaps towards them. They run their enterprises similarly to family businesses and are dedicated to the pursuit of long-term strategies. As a result, billionaire enterprises often are at the forefront of innovation and creators of new business models.

Anne Meaux, founder and head of “Images 7” communication agency, stands behind former Renault-Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn as he addresses a large crowd of journalists on his reasons for dodging trial in Japan, where he is accused of financial misconduct, at the Lebanese Press Syndicate in Beirut on January 8, 2020. – The 65-year-old fugitive auto tycoon vowed to clear his name as he made his first public appearance at a news conference in Beirut since skipping bail in Japan. Ghosn, who denies any wrongdoing, fled charges of financial misconduct including allegedly under-reporting his compensation to the tune of $85 million.

DoorDash is the most popular food delivery service in the country, a freakishly fast-growing unicorn valued at $7 billion just six years after its founding, backed by some of Silicon Valley’s and Saudi Arabia’s leading investors. I’ll slinkingly confess that it is also a provider of my lunch two or three or five times a month, depending on how lazily bougie and nihilistic I happen to be feeling about leaving the house.
In Silicon Valley, you don’t get very far without accidentally creating a permanent digital underclass, and so it probably shouldn’t surprise you to learn that DoorDash has long maintained a compensation policy for its workers that looks pretty much like the outright theft of their tips.

Mineral oil is the most basic variety of engine oils and is most commonly used for a large majority of everyday vehicles. Mineral oils are refined petroleum oils which undergo treatment to perform across a wide temperature range.
Semi-synthetic oil, also known as synthetic blend oil has a small amount of synthetic engine oil blended in with mineral oil to boost its properties without escalating the cost by much. The addition of synthetic oil enhances its viscosity and wear resistance at higher temperatures and stress.
Synthetic oils are essentially mineral oils only; however, they go through an extensive treatment in the lab to make them significantly superior to their mineral counterparts. As a part of the process, the mineral oil is broken down into its most basic molecules, which helps remove any undesired substances and impurities to a very high degree. The molecules of synthetic oil are also very consistent in their size and shape, offering superior lubrication.
As a rule of thumb, everyday, average performance motorcycles don’t require you to spend extra for semi-synthetic or synthetic oil. A good quality mineral oil which complies with the grade recommended by the manufacturer should work well enough.

A chief strategy officer (CSO), or chief strategist, is an executive responsible for assisting the chief executive officer (CEO) with developing, communicating, executing, and sustaining corporate strategic initiatives.
Today, many CEOs have less time to devote to executing strategy, while at the same time uncertain environments increase the need for professional strategy development. As a result, Chairmen, Presidents, and CEOs in academic, nonprofit and corporate organizations are appointing CSOs. In recent years, the CSO position increased in popularity, which is reflected by the high number of US companies (nearly 50% of S&P 500 firms) who created CSO positions in their top management teams.
The CSO is a consultative role; part leader and part doer, with the responsibility of ensuring that execution of the strategy supports the strategy elements. This unique background takes a multitude of different operating experiences, and must include being both a creative thinker and influential collaborator. CSOs are often executives who have worn many hats at a variety of companies or agencies before taking on the responsibilities and tasks that come with the job title.

Rob Warwick, Pete Burden

People say that ‘business isn’t working’. They point to ‘fat cats’ getting richer, environmental damage, lethal working conditions for many people who bring us much of what we buy in the shops, and to rates of ‘progress’ that seems unsustainable.
However, turning that around, we can also see that business has been a force for good in the world. Directly or indirectly it has led to many of the advances that we rely on in health care, food, housing, education, the internet, computing and so on.
It is our view that business can be more of a force for good. But for this to happen we need to develop and sustain a consciousness by which we hold ourselves and others to account – in our day-to-day work.
**
Conscious business has the potential to help us think differently about business; thinking with action as opposed to thinking before action, paying attention to the logic of business as well as emotion, feeling and instinct and intuition.

John Mackey

(What are your four key pillars for conscious capitalism?)
Higher purpose, stakeholder integration, conscious leadership, and conscious culture and management. The four are interconnected and mutually reinforcing. The tenets are foundational; they are not tactics or strategies. They represent the essential elements of an integrated business philosophy that must be understood holistically to be effectively manifested. Higher purpose and core values are central to a conscious business and all the other tenets connect back to these foundational ideas.
**
I tell students and young professionals all the time to follow their hearts, do what they truly love, and if its business, run it by being grounded in ethical consciousness.

Wikipedia

The phrase caveat emptor (“Let the buyer beware” in Latin) and its use as a disclaimer of warranties arise from the fact that buyers typically have less information about the good or service they are purchasing, while the seller has more information. The quality of this situation is known as information asymmetry. Defects in the good or service may be hidden from the buyer, and only known to the seller.

Information asymmetry deals with the study of decisions in transactions where one party has more or better information than the other. This asymmetry creates an imbalance of power in transactions, which can sometimes cause the transactions to go awry, a kind of market failure in the worst case. Examples of this problem are adverse selection, moral hazard, and information monopoly.

Street addresses worldwide are inaccurate, unreliable and don’t exist at all in many places. Poor addressing is expensive and frustrating, hampers economic growth and development, restricts social mobility and affects lives.
Inaccurate addressing limits businesses and frustrates customers
Street addresses can usually identify a building, but aren’t accurate enough to help a courier or taxi driver find the correct entrance. This results in delayed or failed deliveries, and numerous ‘where are you’ phone calls.
There’s no human-friendly way to give a location to a machine
As personal devices, autonomous vehicles and the IoT streamline the way we live, we have an increasing need to communicate very accurate location. Addresses are too broad to direct a drone or an autonomous car, whilst GPS coordinates are complicated and prone to input mistakes.
Billions of people worldwide have no reliable address at all
Without an address, people struggle to access health and education services, register land and vote. Many of these people live in rapidly expanding cities, or informal settlements.

While mums often nag us to perfection, dads teach us how to be imperfectly perfect, which is much needed for balancing ourselves. Life throws at us unexpected expectations. Sometimes we aren’t prepared for the challenges. Posing perfection at those times could be taxing, that is when the little window of allowing ourselves to be sans judgement and beliefs is a savior.
