３月５日、米国の首都ワシントンＤＣで、米政界で最大級の政治圧力を持つロビー団体、米イスラエル公共問題委員会（ＡＩＰＡＣ）の年次総会が開かれた。イスラエル右派の組織ＡＩＰＡＣは、米議会のすべての議員のイスラエルや中東に関する投票行動を監視し、イスラエルに批判的な議員を次の選挙で確実に落選させ、米政界に巨大な影響力を持っている。ＡＩＰＡＣの強さゆえ、米政界はイスラエルに牛耳られている。ＡＩＰＡＣは強すぎる。それなのに、今年の年次総会で検討された主題の一つは「どうやって米政界への影響力をもっと強めるか」だった。
ＡＩＰＡＣは米国の防衛産業と組み、米政府が、イラク戦争やテロ戦争に代表される中東への軍事関与を拡大し続けるべく、圧力をかけてきた。米国が中東にはまり込んでいる限り、ＡＩＰＡＣが動かす米国の中東政策はイスラエルに好都合な内容で、イスラエルは米国の軍事力と覇権に守られている。
しかし、９１１後急拡大した米国の財政赤字を抑える必要から、一昨年以来、米政界で財政緊縮議論が強まった。防衛産業とつながりが深い共和党が軍事費の削減を拒否し、福祉の削減を拒否する民主党との議論がまとまらず、結局、３月１日から罰則的・強制的な歳出の一律削減が始まる事態となった。
国民の生活に必要な米国内の行政支出が強制的に削られる事態に直面し、米政界では、国内事情を優先し、外国に対する公金での経済支援を減額せざるを得ないという議論が強まっている。イスラエルは、米国から毎年３００億ドルの支援を、主に軍事部門で受けている。この支援は、減額される可能性がある。ＡＩＰＡＣは、米政界への影響力をもっと強めることで、イスラエルへの支援を聖域化し、減額を防ごうとしている。
ＡＩＰＡＣは、自分たちが米政界を牛耳っていることを米国のマスコミや市民運動などが指摘するたびに「ユダヤ人差別だ」とレッテルを貼って黙らせ、批判の拡大を防いできた。しかし今回は「米国民の生活より（パレスチナ人を抑圧する）イスラエルへの軍事支援を優先するのはおかしい」と批判する市民団体が増え、年次総会を非難する政治行動も行われた。無敵だったＡＩＰＡＣが、かなり揺らいでいる。
