    Emmett Till was only 14 when he was kidnapped, tortured and killed. The two men who were acquitted of his murder were Roy Bryant and his half brother, J.W. Milam.

    The failure to punish anyone for the crime made headlines across the country and around the world, exposing the racial hatred and unequal justice for blacks that was pervasive in the segregated South, where laws dictated where blacks could eat, drink and sleep.

    The fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman took place in 2012, in Sanford, Florida. Zimmerman was the neighborhood watch coordinator for the gated community where Martin was temporarily staying and where the shooting took place.

    Zimmerman’s trial began on June 10, 2013, in Sanford. On July 13, 2013, a jury acquitted him of second-degree murder and of manslaughter charges.
