It has only been a dozen years, but it seems like a lifetime ago.
All of us will always remember where we were on Sept. 11, 2001. But the day is much more than that.
September 11 changed every one of our lives dramatically. And forever.
Twelve years have passed, and so much has changed, and yet the world we live in today is very much what it was like back then.
As it was 12 years ago, the world is still a confusing place. Twelve years ago, we mocked the French. “Freedom fries,” and all of that.
Today, the French may be our only ally as we contemplate what to do in Syria.

If there is one thing we need to recapture from 12 years ago, it is the feeling that whether we agree or disagree with the president, we are all Americans and we need to stand together.

At times, we have forgotten that. And with that lost sense of unity, we sometimes forget that 3,000 lives were lost on Sept. 11, and so many families shattered forever. We need to remember them. Today and every day. We need to remember the courage of the first responders and the brave folks on Flight 93, and the spirit they gave us back when the days seemed the darkest.

Our lives will never be the same. But we will be better as a nation if we realize we are all in this together.
