    Deer Hunting

    by Greg Klees

From 1940 to the mid-’70s, artists at the Milwaukee Journal created a deer hunting cartoon before each season. The tradition was resurrected by Greg Klees in 1982. Klees produced 12 of the cartoons between 1982 and 1999, including the one above which depicts a Wisconsin deer hunt along the Mississippi River. Klees, who is retired and lives in Brookfield, provided the original print.

Deer can be hard to track after shot

Registration statistics show about one-third of deer hunters in Wisconsin tag at least one deer in a given year.

What isn’t known is how much time and effort was required to track and recover those deer.

The seconds, minutes and sometimes hours after the shot are often filled with uncertainty.

Even deer shot with a high-powered rifle through the heart or lungs, a recommended placement, can run more than 100 yards and disappear from the hunter’s view before expiring.

Hunters are bound by ethics to dedicate themselves to recovery of all wounded game.
