I personally find the intellectual stimulation and periods of nonstop activity gratifying. I am aware, however, that school librarians do not have a monopoly on this experience. At a recent convention session devoted to library programming and services, there was a general consensus that a “librarian mentality” exists, manifesting itself in personality traits such as helpfulness and putting others’ needs and wishes before our own (including issues of finances and respect).
Another plus of my job is the enjoyable experience of selecting, receiving, and reading new and valuable books. I often compare my reaction to opening a box of recent arrivals to that of a child with a new toy.
