LaingThe ‘data’ (given) of research are not so much given as taken out of a constantly elusive matrix of happenings. We should speak of capta rather than data.

    Data are not simply given by the world, but taken from it on the basis of explicit or implicit concepts—capta might be a better term, However these concepts are also not simple, being themselves abstracted from observations and experience.
