超絶的な技巧と鋭い観察眼で、空間の匂い、そして時間の移ろいさえリアルに描き出すといわれる画家がいる。アントニオ・ロペス、７７歳。現代のリアリズム絵画を代表するスペインの巨匠である。
ロペスは１９３６年、スペインの地方都市に生まれた。画家だった伯父に才能を見いだされ、１４歳の時、ピカソも通ったマドリードの名門美術アカデミーに、最年少で入学する。ベラスケスを始めとする、まっすぐに本質をえぐり出すスペイン・リアリズムに強い影響を受けながら、常に実験的な表現を模索してきた。代表作「グラン・ビア」は、朝日に照らされたマドリードの町並みに神秘的な美しさを感じ、毎年夏の朝６時半から２０分だけ筆を入れ、７年をかけて完成させた執念の大作だ。
