Michael Surtees

It’s been a while since I actually thought about why I design, after all it’s what I do all day long and for most of the evening too. But I thought it would be interesting to look back at a statement that wrote before I moved to New York about my world of design.

See to Think
Think to Design
Design to Live

Michael SurteesIt’s a fairly straight forward concept that ideas appear via the world of observation and questioning. If you keep your eyes and mind open and you allow yourself to make connections that you hadn’t considered before, good things happen. But an idea is just that if you don’t know what to do with it. A couple ways of looking at execution is through pre-production, production, post-production, or ok, you have an idea turn the invisible into visible. That’s part of what design is. On a larger plane it’s not about panton colours, web standards or technical babble – but about the recognition that you use the best methods to make something out of nothing. And that is where live comes into play. This process is something that you live with, it’s not a 9 to 5 kind of thing. It’s a philosophy about always keeping your eyes open and creating the right conditions to do what you love.
