Despite the growing diversity nationally, some religious groups clearly occupy a dominant demographic position in particular states. For instance, Catholics are the majority of the population in Massachusetts and Maine as are Mormons in Utah and Baptists in Mississippi. Catholics comprise over 40% of Vermont, New Mexico, New York and New Jersey, while Baptists are over 40% in a number of southern states such as South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Alabama and Georgia.
Historical traces of the Bible belt in the South and an irreligious West are still evident. Those with “no religion” constitute the largest group in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming. In contrast, the percentage of adults who adhere to “no religion” is below 10 % in North and South Dakota, the Carolinas, Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.
Such religious concentrations might well have significant impact on host of public policy issues as well as on such matters as religious-based philanthropy.
It remains the challenge of further explorations of these and related data to discover the complex ways in which the religious identification patterns of the American populace shapes the culture and fate of the United States.

数年前のこと。私の町 Meridian には大きな本屋は三軒しかありませんでした。一軒はキリスト教専門書店。スーパーにはハードカヴァー、ペーパーバック、雑誌がかなりの面積でおいてあるので、普通の人は本の専門店に行かなくても事足りてしまいます。Meridian に来て気が付いたのですが、二軒の一般書の本屋にはポルノ系の雑誌が全く見当たりません。 ‘PLAYBOY’、’PENTHOUSE’ さえありません。「検閲無しのを楽しみにしていたのに、何なんだ一体！」と思いました:-)。
ある本屋の主人と顔なじみになったので、「Mississippi は州の法律で ‘PLAYBOY’ も置けないのか？」と聞いてみました。「いや、法律じゃない。実はうちも当初は置く予定だった。ところが開業前にある御婦人から電話がかかって来て、お宅は ‘PLAYBOY’ は仕入れるのか？と聞くんだ。ええ、入れますよと答えたら、その後開業手続きがやたら難航してしまって…。彼女は熱心なクリスチャンで、うちが “PLAYBOY” を置くという知らせを教会の長老達に御注進し、店の認可に影響を与える偉いさんの反感を買ってしまったらしい。どうせ一部か二部売れるかどうかという ‘PLAYBOY’ なので、じゃあ一切置かないという方針に変えたんだ」
大陸を縦・横断するような模様を描ける場合は「○○ベルト」と呼ぶようで、”Corn belt”（とうもろこし地帯）、”Wheat belt”（小麦地帯）とか松の木が多い地帯を”Pine Belt”と云ったりします。Mississippi 州は “Pine Belt” の一部でもあり、熱心なキリスト教信者が多い “Bible belt” の一部でもあります。41,000人の人口の Meridian に150の教会がありますから、平均して270人に一つの教会があるわけで、道徳的センスも保守的な地域と云っていいでしょう。本屋におけるキリスト教関係書のコーナーも決して小さくありませんし、レコード屋では宗教音楽（キリスト教のニュー・ミュージックやゴスペル）が長い棚を一列占拠していて、地元紙 ‘The Meridian Star’ にも毎週「宗教」の頁というのがあるほどです。まあ、熱心なのは結構ですが、本屋に圧力をかけるというのは行き過ぎですよね。”Bible belt” は黒人の多い “Black belt” でもあります。この場合、柔道とは一切関係ありません:-)。
なお、その後の“調査”（？）で、大きい本屋ではカウンターの後ろに ‘PLAYBOY’、 ‘PENTHOUSE’ を隠していて、リクエストがあった場合のみ取り出すという方式であることが判りました。未成年には見せねえんだ（駄洒落:-)）という姿勢は正しいとしても、ちと大袈裟ですね。
その後、ショッピング・モールにチェーンの大書店が出現し、主人と親しくなった小さな本屋はつぶれてしまいました。
