Theory of knowledge (TOK) is a course about critical thinking and inquiring into the process of knowing, rather than about learning a specific body of knowledge. The TOK course examines how we know what we claim to know. It does this by encouraging students to analyse knowledge claims and explore knowledge questions. A knowledge claim is the assertion that “I/we know X” or “I/we know how to Y”, or a statement about knowledge; a knowledge question is an open question about knowledge. A distinction between shared knowledge and personal knowledge is made in the TOK guide. This distinction is intended as a device to help teachers construct their TOK course and to help students explore the nature of knowledge.
While there are arguably many ways of knowing, the TOK course identifies eight specific ways of knowing (WOKs). They are language, sense perception, emotion, reason, imagination, faith, intuition, and memory.

「知の理論」（ＴＯＫ）は、批判的に思考して、知るプロセスを探究するコースであり、特定の知識体系を身につけるコースではありません。ＴＯＫでは、私たちが「知っている」と主張することを、いったいどのようにして知るのかを考察します。具体的には、「知識に関する主張」（knowledge claim）を分析し、「知識に関する問い」（knowledge question）を探究するよう生徒に働きかけていきます。「知識に関する主張」とは、「私（たち）はＸのことを知っている」や「私（たち）はＹのやり方を知っている」といった主張であり、知識についての説明です。「知識に関する問い」とは、知識についてのオープンな問いです。「共有された知識」（shared knowledge）と「個人的な知識」（personal knowledge）の間の区別も本資料『「知の理論」（ＴＯＫ）指導の手引き』で説明されています。この区別は、教師がＴＯＫコースを考案したり、生徒が「知識の性質」（nature of knowledge）を探究したりする際に役立つものとして設けられています。
「知るための方法」（ＷＯＫｓ：ways of knowing）が多数あることは間違いありません。しかし、ＴＯＫでは、言語、知覚、感情、理論、想像、信仰、直感、記憶の８つの具体的な方法を設定しています。
