Japan leave dressing room spotless in dignified response to Asian Cup final disappointment

    The Telegraph

Japan were praised for their class and dignity in defeat after leaving their dressing room spotless in the wake of their defeat to Qatar in the Asian Cup final on Friday.

The four-time Asian Cup winners also left the words ‘thank you’ on a white board in English, Arabic and Japanese at the Zayed Sports City stadium in Abu Dhabi.

Japan gained immense popularity at last summer’s World Cup when they took the time to clean their changing room after a gut-wrenching last-16 exit to Belgium when they blew a two-goal lead.

Japan’s fans in Russia took care to pick up litter around them at stadiums and tidy up public spaces, inspiring Peru, Colombia and Senegal fans to do the same.

Their bright and progressive passing football impressed at the World Cup, but despite being well fancied for the Asian Cup Japan were left stunned by two first-half Qatar goals and never recovered.

Picking up rubbish and taking pride in your possessions is instilled in Japanese children from an early age.

Tennis star and Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka, born in Japan to a Japanese mother but a United States citizen, has also been praised for her humility. For example, Osaka bows to opponents and the net and is known to clear up her own plastic water bottles and bags from court.

It is the first time 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar have won the competition.

“Today we made history for our country, we need to be very proud about our achievement,” said Qatar coach Felix Sanchez.

“This is one step more towards being ready for 2022 and represent Qatar as a very competitive team at the World Cup.”

The team will now travel back to Doha via Oman where they expect a hero’s welcome. The capital’s streets were gridlocked on Friday with fans draped in the nation’s flag clambering onto cars and rooftops.
