Pancakes (Declan Rice, Arsenal midfielder)

I have four pancakes before a game, covered in syrup or honey. I swear to God, it’s the best thing – it has changed this season.
When I joined the club, I could see the players eating them and thought to myself, “What is going on here?”
But honestly, it’s been a game changer.
I don’t understand the science behind it, but it gives me such a high energy boost. I think that’s why I’m able to rattle around the pitch so much.

Declan Rice credits his new pre-match ritual of consuming pancakes with helping Arsenal in their quest to secure their first Premier League title in 20 years. The Gunners are on the brink of glory and could clinch the title on Sunday if they beat Everton and Manchester City falter against West Ham.

Rice, who joined Arsenal from West Ham for a club-record £105 million last summer, has been pivotal in their title push. The 25-year-old midfielder has delivered an outstanding debut season with seven goals and eight assists, and he attributes part of his success to a surprising dietary choice: pancakes.

In an interview with Men’s Health, Rice revealed, “I have four pancakes before a game, covered in syrup or honey. I swear to God, it’s the best thing – it has changed this season.”

This unconventional pre-match meal was recommended by Arsenal’s nutritionist. Rice admitted his initial skepticism, recalling, “When I joined the club, I could see the players eating them and thought to myself, ‘What is going on here?’

“But honestly, it’s been a game changer. I don’t understand the science behind it, but it gives me such a high energy boost. I think that’s why I’m able to rattle around the pitch so much.”

His pancake routine has grown to the point where, if Arsenal has an evening match, Rice might consume up to eight pancakes in a day, splitting them between breakfast and a pre-game snack.

Rice’s energy and presence in midfield were evident last weekend as Arsenal secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Manchester United, keeping their title hopes alive heading into the final day.

After narrowly missing out on the title in the final weeks of the 2022/23 campaign, Arsenal remains hopeful for a different outcome this season. Manager Mikel Arteta expressed optimism following the victory against United, telling Sky Sports, “Today, we wanted to open that door to say, last game in front of our people, our families will be there and let’s live one of the most beautiful days we have lived together and see what happens. It’s football. There are always possibilities.”
