14世紀に、ペストのせいで、8千5百万人が死んだ。地球上の4億4千万人のうちの5分の1近くが死んだことになる。言い換えると、5分の4以上の人はペストの蔓延にもかかわらず死ななかったということで、確かにパンデミックは怖いけれど、人という種を根絶やしにするような力はない。
世界中で人が殺し合った20世紀の前半、人口は減少するどころか増大し、1900年の16億から1950年の25億へと増え続けた。戦争に人口を減少させる力はない。
この50年の間に、大規模な地震、津波、洪水、山火事などが起きた。それでも人口が減少することはなく、1965年の33億から2015年の72億へと増え続けた。災害に人の数を減らす力はない。
疫病も、戦争も、災害も、人口増加を抑制することができないとすれば、人は、その種が滅びる日まで、ずっと増え続けることになる。どんな終わりが待っているのか、とても興味深いが、私はそれを知る前に死ぬ。
この50年で、人口は2倍以上になった。これを変だと思わない私たちは、本当に変な存在だ。
