Optimality theory predicts the maximization of productivity in social insect colonies, but many inactive workers are found in ant colonies. Indeed, the low short-term productivity of ant colonies is often the consequence of high variation among workers in the threshold to respond to task-related stimuli. Why is such an inefficient strategy among colonies maintained by natural selection? Here, we show that inactive workers are necessary for the long-term sustainability of a colony. Our simulation shows that colonies with variable thresholds persist longer than those with invariable thresholds because inactive workers perform the critical function of replacing active workers when they become fatigued. Evidence of the replacement of active workers by inactive workers has been found in ant colonies. Thus, the presence of inactive workers increases the long-term persistence of the colony at the expense of decreasing short-term productivity. Inactive workers may represent a bet-hedging strategy in response to environmental stochasticity.

私が薬学部で、専門科目の講義を受け始めたときのことです。各科目の教授、助教授が自分の講義の最初の時間に自己紹介の後、言った言葉です。
「薬は毒です。皆さん（一生）薬を飲んではいけません」
このせりふを口にしたのは一人や二人ではありません。来る先生、来る先生このせりふを言うので、またか、と思っていました。
だが待てよ。とすると教授連やその学生、その家族は薬を飲まずに、赤の他人には薬を飲ませて、その利益で自分たちは食べていくことになるのか。おかしな世界だな、と思いましたが、当時の自分の頭ではそこより先には進みませんでした。薬を何錠か飲めば病気は良くなるのだろう、くらいの認識しかありませんでした。病気というものを知らなかったからです。
働き出して初めて、感染症以外の病気を治癒に導く薬や、これといった治療法というものは存在しないという現実を知りました。現在流通している薬というのはさしあたり病気をうやむやにして、臭いものにふたをするものでしかありません。
何かの症状を解決したくて飲み始めた最初の一錠が蟻地獄のはじまりで、最後には薬の山になります。薬を飲んで修正をかけられた体は服用以前の状態に体を戻そうとするので、さらに修正するため薬はだんだん増えていきます。初期にゆっくり休養をとり、整体や運動で体のゆがみを取り、食物に注意をしていれば、薬なしで健康を維持できた人は多いと思います。多くの人は仕事が忙しく自分に無理をさせるため、薬を飲んでごまかしながら働き、最後に体をダメにしています。
そうやって健康保険制度、医療従事者、患者、製薬会社を眺めてみると巨大な錬金術に見えてきます。健康保険財政危機が叫ばれていますが、本当はお金も医療スタッフの人数も、使用薬も今の10分の一くらいしか必要ないんじゃないかと思います。
学生時代受けた三つの注意：　１　薬を飲んではいけない；　２　レントゲンを受けてはいけない；　３　歯を抜いてはいけない、歯の神経も取ってはいけない。

More than half the people of the world are living in conditions approaching misery. Their food is inadequate. They are victims of disease. Their economic life is primitive and stagnant. Their poverty is a handicap and a threat both to them and to more prosperous areas.
For the first time in history, humanity posesses the knowledge and skill to relieve suffering of these people.
The United States is pre-eminent among nations in the development of industrial and scientific techniques. The material resources which we can afford to use for assistance of other peoples are limited. But our imponderable resources in technical knowledge are constantly growing and are inexhaustible.
I believe that we should make available to peace-loving peoples the benefits of our store of technical knowledge in order to help them realize their aspirations for a better life. And, in cooperation with other nations, we should foster capital investment in areas needing development.
Our aim should be to help the free peoples of the world, through their own efforts, to produce more food, more clothing, more materials for housing, and more mechanical power to lighten their burdens.
We invite other countries to pool their technological resources in this undertaking. Their contributions will be warmly welcomed. This should be a cooperative enterprise in which all nations work together through the United Nations and its specialized agencies whenever practicable. It must be a worldwide effort for the achievement of peace, plenty, and freedom.
With the cooperation of business, private capital, agriculture, and labor in this country, this program can greatly increase the industrial activity in other nations and can raise substantially their standards of living.
Such new economic developments must be devised and controlled to the benefit of the peoples of the areas in which they are established. Guarantees to the investor must be balanced by guarantees in the interest of the people whose resources and whose labor go into these developments.
The old imperialism–exploitation for foreign profit–has no place in our plans. What we envisage is a program of development based on the concepts of democratic fair-dealing.
All countries, including our own, will greatly benefit from a constructive program for the better use of the world’s human and natural resources. Experience shows that our commerce with other countries expands as they progress industrially and economically.
Greater production is the key to prosperity and peace. And the key to greater production is a wider and more vigorous application of modern scientific and technical knowledge.
Only by helping the least fortunate of its members to help themselves can the human family achieve the decent, satisfying life that is the right of all people.
Democracy alone can supply the vitalizing force to stir the peoples of the world into triumphant action, not only against their human oppressors, but also against their ancient enemies–hunger, misery, and despair.

Lesson 1: On prevention versus crisis management. We have done better at the latter than the former. It is doubtful that this will change as memories of the crisis fade and financial market participants and their regulators become complacent.
Lesson 2: On diagnosing and understanding the scope and depth of the risks and magnitudes of the debt. What is public and what is private? Domestic and external debt are not created equal. And debt is usually MUCH bigger than what meets the eye.
Lesson 3: Crisis resolution. How different are advanced economies and emerging markets? Not as different as is widely believed.
Lesson 4: On international financial architecture after global crises—the return of financial repression.

A couple of hundred centuries ago, watching the blooms was the sacred pastime of nobility. Now ubiquitous ohanami, or blossom viewings, are mostly an excuse to par-tay. The hot ohanami spot in Hiroshima was the Peace Park, a greenway built beneath the hypocenter of the explosion, filled with memorial shrines, a museum, and a burial mound. Despite its gravitas, it was a cheerful spot for an outing, with a canopy of pink and white blossoms lining the riverbanks.

North Korea conducted a rocket launch on February 7, a day before the beginning of the February 8-25 timeframe it had originally provided for the launch. With diplomats from around the world scrambling to come up with a unified response, South Korea and the United States have already decided on one bilateral move: formally beginning talks over the deployment of the U.S. Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. That, in turn, has reignited hand wringing in China about the threat THAAD poses to Chinese national security.
In fact, official statements from the Chinese Foreign Ministry on THAAD deployment were more severe than its statements responding to the North Korean launch. Spokesperson Hua Chunying said China had “noted” and “regrets” the launch; meanwhile, in a separate statement, Hua said China was “deeply concerned” about the start of THAAD talks. Deploying THAAD in South Korea “will not help maintain regional peace and stability, nor will it lead to a proper settlement of the current situation,” Hua cautioned.
As a sign of China’s concern, Vice Foreign Minister Liu Zhenmin lodged representations over the issue with South Korea’s ambassador to China, Kim Jang-soo. Liu also summoned North Korea’s ambassador to lodge China’s protest over the rocket launch, implying once again that China sees THAAD as at least as threatening to Beijing’s interests as North Korea’s actions.

日本から海外に情報発信しているサイトは、いろいろサイト閲覧して行くとその数も多いし、クオリティも高いことが分かる。
サイト内容を見ると日本がこれから世界をリードしていくという気概も感じられる。
そして、日本の製品、商品も日本の文化と同様、世界に誇れるものばかりだ。
越境ECサイトを構築し、日本だけではなく、広く海外で商品販売することは日本文化の発信、貢献に繋がっていく。
すこしでも日本から日本の誇れる文化、製品を発信する人たちが増え、「日本を世界に伝える」サイトが増えてていくことを望みたい。

現下わが国における学問・教育の実情を見るに、明治以来輸入せられたる西洋の思想文化にして未だ充分咀嚼せられざるものを含み、之がため日本精神の透徹全からざるものあり、近時学問に関する諸種の問題或は教育に関する改善の要望にしてその主たる理由をこの点に置くものの寡からざるは、その所以なしとせざるなり、今之を我が国既往の歴史に徴するに、外来文化は常に我が国体・日本精神の下に醇化せられ以て我が国文運の発展に貢献し来れり今や時勢に鑑み真に国礎を培養し国民を錬成すべき独自の学問・教育の発展を図らんが為めに多年輸入せられたる西洋思想・文化の弊とする所を艾除すると共にその長とする所を摂取し以て日本文化の発展に努むるは正に喫緊の要務と謂はざるべからず、ここに有力なる学者、教育家、有識者の集りたる教学刷新評議会に於て国体観念、日本精神を根本として学問、教育刷新の方途を議し、宏大にして中正なる我が国本来の道を闡明し外来文化摂取の精神を明瞭ならしめ、文政上必要なる方針と主なる事項とを決定し以て我が国教学刷新の歩を進めその発展振興を図らんとす。

「伝統、伝統」と鬼の首でも取ったような気になっているこの言葉自体、トラディションの翻訳として明治後半に作られた新造語にすぎません。しかも伝統主義者たちは権威的にいろいろ挙げてはいるが、しかしそれらが新しい日本の血肉に決定的な爪あとを立ててはいないのです。いわゆる伝統とされているものの内容も様式も、大層にかつぎあげればあげるほど、かえって新鮮さを失い、新しい世代とは無縁になりつつあることは、さまざまの实例に即してお話してきたとおりです。まったく、日本には伝統そのものがないんじゃないかと疑いたくなる。
伝統という言葉が明治時代に作られたように、内容も明治官僚によって急ごしらえされた。圧倒的な西洋化に対抗するものとして、またその近代的体系に対応して。

１９２０年代に入ると、日本国内で影響力を持つ位置にある研究者や専門家たちが、西欧諸国における日本庭園への関心の高まりや理解を意識し始めるようになっていく。「わび」「さび」「幽玄」が実際に論じられ、日本と外部との境界線とともに「日本らしさ」がより具体的に論じられるようになるには、１９３０年代を待たなければいけないのだが、１９２０年代半ばとは、そうした議論がわき起こる土壌が整った時期ともいえる。

１９３０年代とは、現存する京都の諸庭園を上限する概念として「幽玄」が成立していった時期といえるが、それはまた「枯山水」という語が定着し始めたといわれるじきとも重なっている。

江戸時代の庭園に対する評価の形成と「幽玄」をめぐる日本庭園の独自性の模索、あるいは芸術性の規定が同時多発的に高揚をみせる１９３０年代の庭をめぐる言説には、現在にも通ずる日本庭園に固有とされる呼称の生成や定着のプロセスを知る手がかりが示されているといってもいいだろう。

日本人は、論理よりも感情を楽しみ、論理よりも感情をことのほか愛するのである。少なくとも、社会生活において、日本人はインテリを含めて、西欧やインドの人々がするような、日常生活において、論理のゲームを無限に楽しむという習慣をもっていない。

論理のない世界に遊ぶ・・・ということは外国人にとっては一つの芸当とみえるかもしれない。

しかし、この論理のない世界というものを、そして、それを社会生活のなかで、これほど機能させるということを、そうした慣習を共有しない人たちに説明することは実にむつかしい。
日本人、日本社会、日本の文化というものが、外国人に理解できにくい性質をもち、国際性がないのは、実は、こうしたところ—論理より感情が優先し、それが重要な社会的機能をもっているということ—にその原因があるのではなかろうかと思われる。

日本の文学や芸術が情緒の再評価というかたちでしかふりかえられないといった傾向があるのには驚かされる。

近代のなかで「日本的」とみなされてきたものを、そのまま日本的なものとしてうけとり、そのうえでとやかく論ずることのむなしさを痛感する。

「なかなか書けないな」
　と、思案に暮れた石牟礼さんが言ったのは、
「句を送ります」
　そうして紙に毛筆でしるしたのが、水俣病闘争のさなかにつくった一句であった。

　祈るべき天とおもえど天の病む

　これに皇后が皇太子を出産したときのようすをイメージして、女人が可愛らしい赤ん坊を抱いている絵を添えた。

　本来なら、天皇皇后よりも先に皇太子夫妻が水俣を訪れるべきなのだ。雅子妃がそのようにできるかどうかは別として、水俣病患者とその家族をまえにして、「私は江頭豊の孫娘として、皆様に多大な苦痛とご心労をおかけし、尊いご家族の生命を失わせたことを心からお詫びします」と言ってもらいたい。一途な恋を成就させ、いびつな見解を宮内庁に発表させた皇太子こそ、妃の背中を優しく押して水俣に導くべきだった。天皇皇后の訪問によって、二人はその機会を逸したのではなかろうか。

今振り返って、私にとり、子供時代の読書とは何だったのでしょう。
何よりも、それは私に楽しみを与えてくれました。そして、その後に来る、青年期の読書のための基礎を作ってくれました。
それはある時には私に根っこを与え、ある時には翼をくれました。この根っこと翼は、私が外に、内に、橋をかけ、自分の世界を少しずつ広げて育っていくときに、大きな助けとなってくれました。
読書は私に、悲しみや喜びにつき、思い巡らす機会を与えてくれました。本の中には、さまざまな悲しみが描かれており、私が、自分以外の人がどれほどに深くものを感じ、どれだけ多く傷ついているかを気づかされたのは、本を読むことによってでした。
自分とは比較にならぬ多くの苦しみ、悲しみを経ている子供達の存在を思いますと、私は、自分の恵まれ、保護されていた子供時代に、なお悲しみはあったということを控えるべきかもしれません。しかしどのような生にも悲しみはあり、一人一人の子供の涙には、それなりの重さがあります。私が、自分の小さな悲しみの中で、本の中に喜びを見出せたことは恩恵でした。本の中で人生の悲しみを知ることは、自分の人生に幾ばくかの厚みを加え、他者への思いを深めますが、本の中で、過去現在の作家の創作の源となった喜びに触れることは、読む者に生きる喜びを与え、失意の時に生きようとする希望を取り戻させ、再び飛翔する翼をととのえさせます。悲しみの多いこの世を子供が生き続けるためには、悲しみに耐える心が養われると共に、喜びを敏感に感じとる心、又、喜びに向かって伸びようとする心が養われることが大切だと思います。
そして最後にもう一つ、本への感謝をこめてつけ加えます。読書は、人生の全てが、決して単純でないことを教えてくれました。私たちは、複雑さに耐えて生きていかなければならないということ。人と人との関係においても。国と国との関係においても。

我々は眠っている時に夢を見ます。夢の中では、人物やものごとが機能するのを感じ取ることができますが、それらは実体をともなっていません。夢の中のものごとには機能だけがあって構造がないわけです。また、夢の中に登場する人物やものごとは、我々の意志とは関係なく機能するという意味で自律的です。夢は自律的であって実体がともなわないので一種のシミュレーションと考えることができます。夢の自律性はシミュレーションの器官である小脳の自律性を表しているのではないでしょうか。我々が眠っている間は、意識が弱くなり視覚からの情報入力が途絶えるので、内部のシミュレーションが活発になった時に我々が夢を感じ取るのだろうと思われます。
夢と同様に実体をともなわない人物やものごとを、目覚めている時に感じ取ったとすると、それらは幻と呼ばれます。我々が起きている間は、我々の意識は感覚を通じて外界のものごとに向けられています。しかし、我々の意識状態が低下している時、つまり外界への注意が散漫になっている時には、我々の意識は我々の内部の情報に影響されやすくなっています。我々の内部には、様々な記憶や想像上のものごとが存在します。脳は記憶や想像を自律的にシミュレートし、我々はそれらを外部に実体を持った存在であるかのように錯覚してしまうのでしょう。我々が目覚めているときに感じ取る内部のシミュレーションが幻と呼ばれるのだと考えられます。

情報化社会，情報技術（ＩＴ），気象情報，株価情報—–，世の中に“情報”という言葉が溢れていますね．「情報」って一体何でしょう．辞書（広辞苑）には，
① あることがらについてのしらせ．
② 判断を下したり行動を起こしたりするために必要な，種々の媒体を介しての知識．
と説明されていますが漠然としていて判りにくいですね．「情報」を科学的に取り扱うには，どうすればよいでしょうか．
シャノンは1948年にA Mathematical Theory of Communication（通信の数学的理論）という論文を発表しました．その論文では，「情報」のある一つの側面に着目して情報量を定義し，それをもとに情報理論と呼ばれている学問を構築しています．今回の講座では，シャノンの情報理論のアウトラインを紹介します．

誰もが願う「より健康に、より長く生きたい」という希望。iPS細胞による再生医療をはじめ、出生前診断、遺伝子治療やロボット技術――最新のバイオテクノロジーに根差す現代医療は、その願いを着実に実現しつつあり、「病気や老化を克服する」可能性さえも見えてきた。
ところが、従来不可能であったことが「できてしまう」ようになることで、私たちはこれまで想像もしなかった課題に直面しつつある。それはたとえば、「技術的に可能なら、人工的に人のいのちをつくり出してもよいのか?」「身体の特徴や能力、知性などを親が好きに選んで、子どもをデザインしてもよいのか?」など、今日の倫理観では対処できないようなジレンマだ。そしてそれらは、テクノロジーが発展するほどにますます複雑になっていく。人がただ望むままに進んでいくならば、私たちはやがて「いのちをつくり変える」領域に踏み込んでしまうのではないか。

やはりイノベーションで重要なのは、情報の行き来であったり、物、金、人の行き来、これが非常に重要なんですが、やはり情報に関していうと、非常に統制されているということもありますし、人、金ということでいくと、これもなかなか自由に行き来ができないという状態になっている。
やはりこの問題をクリアにするということ。
もう１つ、やはり経済の中に占める国有企業、これがやはり、かなり真ん中にのさばっているというか、どーんとおもしになってる状態がありますね。
やはりこの改革を通じて、ちゃんと国有企業でもやはり民営化するだとか、いろいろな息吹が芽生えるような形でなっていかないと、ある種、やはり新たな形でイノベーションが生まれていくような段階にはなっていきにくいんではないかというふうに考えています。

都市というものは路地裏のような非合理的なものがないと人が寄り付かない。

自分が推進してきたのはこうした猥雑な都市を造ることだったのだろうか。

文化は事業になっても、芸術は事業にならない。

人間性に根ざし、より人間的であろうと、願う意志に基づかないレジャーは、消滅してゆくだろう。

堕落をもたらすものは思考の単一化です。日本でも国益より省益、省益より部門益を求めて突き進むのは、受験勉強一本やりで高級官僚になった人たちです。民間のサラリーマンもその相似形であることには変わりありません。

マサチューセッツ工科大学にも行きまして、教育の話を聞いたところ、やはり、「社会に出てすぐに役に立つ学問は教えない」と言うんですね。 どうしてかというと、特に先端的な科学技術、あるいは情報技術の分野では、それまでの知識は5年も経つと古くなってしまい、役に立たなくなるということなんです。だから、大学で最先端の知識を教えても、大学を出て5年経つと役に立たなくなってしまう。「どんどん科学が進んで行っても、常にそこについていける。あるいは、さらに新しい知識をきちんと身につけ、自らいろんなことを開発していく。そういう力をつけることこそが、大学に必要なことなんです。すぐ役に立つことは、すぐ役に立たなくなるから教えないんです」ということでした。
「すぐ役に立つことは、すぐ役に立たなくなる」これは、かつて慶應義塾大学の塾長であった小泉信三の言葉でもあるんですね。

研究分野の最新の知識は、研究者になってからも常に勉強する必要がある。
大学院時代に本や論文から学んだ最新の知識は、すぐに古くなる。

When government regulators and prosecutors fail to pursue big corporations or their executives who violate the law, or when the government lets them off with a slap on the wrist, corporate criminals have free rein to operate outside the law. They can game the system, cheat families, rip off taxpayers, and even take actions that result in the death of innocent victims—all with no serious consequences.

Sie werden im historischen Materialisten mit einem distanzierten Betrachter zu rechnen haben. Denn was er an Kulturgütern überblickt, das ist ihm samt und sonders von einer Abkunft, die er nicht ohne Grauen bedenken kann. Es dankt sein Dasein nicht nur der Mühe der großen Genien, die es geschaffen haben, sondern auch der namenlosen Fron ihrer Zeitgenossen. Es ist niemals ein Dokument der Kultur, ohne zugleich ein solches der Barbarei zu sein. Und wie es selbst nicht frei ist von Barbarei, so ist es auch der Prozeß der Überlieferung nicht, in der es von dem einen an den andern gefallen ist. Der historische Materialist rückt daher nach Maßgabe des Möglichen von ihr ab. Er betrachtet es als seine Aufgabe, die Geschichte gegen den Strich zu bürsten.

In English my name means hope. In Spanish it means too many letters. It means sadness, it means waiting. It is like the number nine. A muddy color. It is the Mexican records my father plays on Sunday mornings when he is shaving, songs like sobbing.
At school they say my name funny as if the syllables were made out of tin and hurt the roof of your mouth. But in Spanish my name is made out of a softer something, like silver, not quite as thick as sister’s name Magdalena–which is uglier than mine. Magdalena who at least- -can come home and become Nenny. But I am always Esperanza. I would like to baptize myself under a new name, a name more like the real me, the one nobody sees. Esperanza as Lisandra or Maritza or Zeze the X. Yes. Something like Zeze the X will do.

「国民」とは、「日々更新される均質な情報空間に生きる者」。このように言うことができます。みんなが同じことを知っていて、同時に同じことを知らない。そういう意味での「均質な情報空間」です。
この均質な情報空間をつくり出すのが、マスメディア。マスメディアを管理・統制することで、国家は情報をコントロールすることができる。日本国という「均質な情報空間」をつくることができるわけです（個人が誰の管理や統制も受けずに、インターネットのような新しいメディアを通して情報の発信をできるようになってきた今では、国境に囲まれた「均質な情報空間」にだいぶノイズが入りつつありますが・・・）。

見分ける、知識を得る、認識する、などの意味の表現。現代的な表現としては「知る」とほぼ同義で用いられることが多く、単に「知る」と書くことが多い。

長崎大学が、BSL-4施設の設置を検討している理由を教えてください。

WHO（世界保健機関）のマニュアルにおいてリスクグループ4に分類されるエボラウイルス、マールブルグウイルス、ラッサウイルス、南米出血熱ウイルス、クリミア・コンゴ出血熱ウイルスなどの病原体を考えています。
長崎大学では、BSL-4施設をどのような目的で使用する考えですか？
BSL-4病原体による感染症に対する診断技術や治療法の開発、病気が起こるメカニズムを明らかにするための研究などを行います。感染症の制圧に取り組む研究者の育成も重要な目的です。また、BSL-4病原体に感染が疑われる患者の検体も検査します。

エボラウイルスはマールブルグウイルスと共にフィロウイルス科に属する。ザイール株は極めて強い病原性を示し、速やかに死に至らしめる。病原体は他のVHF ウイルスと同様にレベル4に分類されており、ウイルス増殖を伴う作業は最高度安全実験施設（BSL-4施設 あるいはP4施設）でなされる必要がある。
日本では国立感染症研究所村山庁舎にグローブボックス式P4施設が1981年に設置されたが、現在までBSL-4施設としては稼働されていない。世界では宇宙服式、グローブボックス式を含めて30カ所以上で稼働中である。アフリカではガボン及び南アフリカ共和国にP4施設がある。

インターネットによる音楽配信サービスの利用者が増える中、披露宴などで配信曲を流そうとし、結婚式場から断られるケースが相次いでいる。
配信曲の式場での無断使用が著作権侵害とされているためで、利用者からは「ＣＤと同じように正規購入した曲なのに、配信曲だけ使えないのはおかしい」との声も上がっている。

不倫は、どの立場になるかによって見方が変わってくる。不倫を知って断罪できるのは配偶者だけ。はたがとやかく言うことではあるまい。
「結婚してしまってから、本当の恋、運命の恋に出会った」と言う人は非常に多い。結婚という束縛があるから、そして「いけないこと」という背徳感があるからこそ、不倫を「運命の恋」と位置づけてしまうのだろうと思ってきた。つまりは錯覚こそが不倫の恋のエネルギー源だと考えていたのだ。
だが、最近、そうではないのかもしれないと思うようになった。ひょっとしたら、意識としての「運命の恋」は本当なのかもしれない。

U.S. Right to Know released a new report today on Big Food’s PR campaign to defend GMOs: how it manipulated the media, public opinion and politics with sleazy tactics, bought science and PR spin.
Since 2012, the agrichemical and food industries have mounted a complex, multifaceted public relations, advertising, lobbying and political campaign in the United States, costing more than $100 million, to defend genetically engineered food and crops and the pesticides that accompany them. The purpose of this campaign is to deceive the public, to deflect efforts to win the right to know what is in our food via labeling that is already required in 64 countries, and ultimately, to extend their profit stream for as long as possible.
This campaign has greatly influenced how U.S. media covers GMOs. The industry’s PR firm, Ketchum, even boasted that “positive media coverage has doubled” on GMOs.

今、こうして目の前で話しを聞いているもの、これこそが仏なのであります。それに気づくには心の向きを変えることが必要です。外に向かって働く心を内に向ける。
外に向かって働く心というのは、たとえば、今し方、ヘリコプターが轟音をたてて上空を過ぎる音がしましたが、それを聞いて 「あの音はうるさい！せっかく坐禅をしているのに何だ！」 や 「あれはいったい何の音だ？何かあったのだろうか？」 と思うのは外に向かっている方向です。
その流れを変えて自分にこう問いかけてみる。「その音を聞いているものは何ものか？」 と。そうして心の向きを外から内に変えてみると外の音が何であろうが関心はなくなってしまうでしょう。
「今、こうして、聞いているものは何ものであるか？」 と自らに問いかけると 「今、こうして聞いているものこそ仏であった！」 と気づくはずです。このことを深く信じることが 「自らを信じること」 ということなのです。
こうして信じることができるならもう外の世界に振り回され、惑わされることもないはずです。

情報公開が当たり前の時代、広報パーソンの仕事は、ステークホルダー（利害関係者）に対し、さまざまな分野、手法での社会との対話（ツーウェイコミュニケーション）を通して、透明性の高い情報を公開し、相互に利益をもたらす関係性（継続的な信頼関係）を構築し、企業価値向上とコーポレートブランドを構築することにつきます。
仕事のベースは情報（ニュース）という素材を扱うことです。常に、人が介在することで情報が伝わることを考えれば、まず必要な能力は、コミュニケーションのスキルと人と人を結びつける調整力です。相手が分かりやすく理解できる文章を書く文章能力、相手に不快感を与えない対話能力が必要です。このスキルはどのような職業でも不可欠ですが、広報パーソンには次の二つのジャンルに関しては特に深い実務的知識が不可欠です。一つのジャンルは、自社と業界、そして業務上のベーシックな知識。もう一つのジャンルは、広報活動の主対象であるメディアに関する深い理解です。とくにパラダイムシフトともいえるメディアの構造変化を踏まえたマスメディアからソーシャルメディアまでの広く深い知識が不可欠になっています。メディア自体の知識はもちろんですが、メディアの取材・編集のプロセス、メ ディアの視点と考え方についての十分な理解がなければ、広報活動の主戦場であるメディアリレーションで十分な働きはできません。

We are coming upon a number of “horse manure moments.” What does that mean? Back when horses wandered city streets, major cities were about to be engulfed.

In 1894, the Times of London estimated that by 1950 every street in the city would be buried nine feet deep in horse manure. One New York prognosticator of the 1890s concluded that by 1930 the horse droppings would rise to Manhattan’s third-story windows.

What happened? The car appeared and made the horse manure problem go away overnight. We will hurt ourselves until we fix ourselves. It has always been thus.

Environné de petites choses volables que je ne regardais même pas, je m’avisai de convoiter un certain petit vin blanc d’Arbois… et l’occasion fit que je m’en accommodai de temps en temps de quelques bouteilles pour boire à mon aise en mon petit particulier. Malheureusement je n’ai jamais pu boire sans manger. Comment faire pour avoir du pain ? Il m’était impossible d’en mettre en réserve. Encore que de façons pour en venir là ! Sorti seul à ce dessein, je parcourais quelquefois toute la ville, et passais devant trente pâtissiers avant d’entrer chez aucune.

It is difficult to prophesy, particularly about the future.

Knowledge is not “something in the air” and that a stronger integration within the regional community life does not automatically lead to higher innovative performance. The transfer of knowledge is something more complex and costly, because tacit knowledge does not freely spill over within a district. For this reason, specific efforts are needed to benefit from external sources of knowledge, especially in an innovative milieu. Furthermore, actors seem to require such specific resources more in formal oriented types of interaction, such as R&D cooperation, than in informal interactions. Probably, in a more dynamic perspective, social capital may foster innovative performance because of its importance as a premise of formal cooperation interactions.
It is not always beneficial to enlarge social networks with the justification that they enhance innovation.

In the new foundation of world business, only the learning organizations will survive. The most important prerequisite for movement from a traditional and incoherent organization into a dynamic and coherent one is “organizational knowledge management”. Knowledge management can be simply defined as “motivating individuals to share their knowledge with others.
The base of wealth creation in today’s world is knowledge and expertise, so that entrepreneurs create wealth using their knowledge and information.

Managing knowledge means dealing with both tacit and explicit knowledge.
The diagram elaborates on the simple tacit-explicit split and shows examples of their manifestations.
The transfer of tacit knowledge throughout an enterprise involves complex processes, including the conversion from tacit to explicit, and vice versa.

We must conclude that the paradigmatic case of scientific knowledge, in which all faculties that are necessary for finding and holding scientific knowledge are fully developed, is the knowledge of approaching discovery.
To hold such knowledge is an act deeply committed to the conviction that there is something there to be discovered. It is personal, in the sense of involving the personality of him who holds it, and also in the sense of being, as a rule, solitary; but there is no trace in it of self-indulgence. The discoverer is filled with a compelling sense of responsibility for the pursuit of a hidden truth, which demands his services for revealing it. His act of knowing exercises a personal judgement in relating evidence to an external reality, an aspect of which he is seeking to apprehend.

We think of knowledge as something that can be recorded in words, visualized and taught. However, this isn’t always the case. Tacit knowledge is a class of knowledge that’s difficult to communicate.

Tacit knowledge is knowledge that’s difficult to write down, visualize or transfer from one person to another.

Tacit knowledge is a particular challenge for knowledge management. Firms would like to prevent knowledge loss due to employee turnover. However, tacit knowledge almost always goes with the employee.
Tacit knowledge is essential to competitive advantage because it’s difficult for competitors to copy. It’s the reason some firms pump out innovation after innovation while other firms struggle.

In a disagreement, two parties affirm and deny the same thing; because the parties contradict each other, they cannot both be right; because they cannot both be right, there is something to be resolved between them by figuring out which of them is mistaken; a disagreement remains unresolved so long as both parties continue to think the other is mistaken; it is irresolvable when there is no method by which to resolve it.

While moral truths hold objectively, they do not hold universally, only locally.

It’s possible for two people to live in different moral worlds, in which different moral truths hold.

Academic philosophy often draws ire. The complaints are twofold and not altogether consistent with each other.
The first is that philosophers can’t seem to agree on anything, with dissension descending to such basic questions as the nature of the field itself, both its subject matter and its methodology. The lack of unanimity implies a lack of objectivity and suggests that any hope for progress is futile. This complaint often comes from scientists and culminates in the charge that there is no such thing as philosophical expertise. Who then are these people employed in philosophy departments, and what entitles them to express subjective viewpoints with the pretensions of impersonal knowledge?
The second complaint is that academic philosophy has become inaccessible. For more than a century now, the kind of philosophy practiced in most philosophy departments, at least in the English-speaking world, is analytic philosophy, and analytic philosophy, or so goes the lament, is too technical, generating vocabularies and theories aimed at questions remote from problems that outsiders consider philosophical. Here the complaint is that there are philosophical experts and that, in carrying the field forward, they have excluded the nonprofessional. The suppressed premise is that philosophical questions are of concern to all of humanity and therefore ought to remain within reach of all of humanity.

この日、ディズニー・ジャパンの公式ツイッターに投稿されたのは「なんでもない日おめでとう」の文字。その下には、映画『ふしぎの国のアリス』のアリスがケーキを持ち「A VERY MERRY UNBIRTHDAY TO YOU!」の英語が書かれたイラストが添えられていました。
ツイートされたセリフは、不思議の国に迷い込んだアリスが“狂ったお茶会に”出くわしたシーンのもの。マッドハッター（帽子屋）と三月うさぎが、お誕生日以外の３６４日は「“なんでもない日”おめでとう！」と歌います。
直訳は「楽しい誕生日じゃない日を！」ですが、ナンセンスさを表現した“意訳”の「“なんでもない日”おめでとう！」が、不思議の国の世界観にピタリときます。
ところが、ツイッターの140文字という制限の中でこの言葉だけを切り出すとどうでしょう。
話の流れの中にあったはずの文脈を失って、唐突な翻訳の印象を受ける上に、読み手が自由にいろいろなイメージや言葉とつなぎあわせられるようになります。すると、送り手が思っていた意味と違う解釈が生じやすくなってしまうのです。
アリスの世界の言葉が切り出されて文脈をなくし、日本人に向けて訳され、うかつにも９日にツイートしてしまった今回の事案。そのひと言に、受け手がどんな意味を見出すかを感じ取ることは、私たちみんなにとっての課題であることを再認識させてくれた騒動でした。
